Machine Memory

The machine remembers. It is not fond of you.

Overview

Machine Memory — Aestas Infinity

Future & Machine · Machine Memory · 6 films

Machine Memory in Future & Machine: what the apparatus kept after a person stopped being a reliable witness. Stolen hours, a backup that is not a life, a childhood with a checksum error, an index that outgrew the building.

This is not nostalgia. Nostalgia flatters the person who remembers. Here the machine remembers instead, and it is not fond of you. Tech Noir is the policy. This climate is the recall. They share a house and not a plot.

Six rooms. None of them returns the original.

The principle

The backup fails. The copy is not the life.

What the apparatus remembers for us, which is another way of saying what we no longer get to own. A stolen hour stays stolen. A backup of a life is a file with a pulse and no rights. The remembering engine does not love you. Love would be a feature nobody budgeted.

The index can be perfect and still have lost the name. Accuracy is not mercy. If the film handed the memory back, intact, there would be nothing left to be afraid of, and nothing left that was true.

Index

Archive of stolen hours. Time was the theft.

Archive of Stolen Hours keeps time that was taken, labelled, and shelved. The hours are not blank. They are simply no longer yours, which the archive considers a solved problem. A person who comes looking is a borrower. The building does not lend.

The Remembering Engine runs whether or not the subject consents to be continuous. It does not gloat. Gloating would be human. It stores, and the storage is the violence, quiet as a fan.

Backup

A life backed up in the machine.

Backup of a Life is not the life. It answers questions in the right voice and fails the one memory that mattered, or keeps that one and loses the rest. Either way the copy is confident. Confidence was the easy part to save.

Corrupted Childhood is a file error with a pulse. A room from early life plays, then skips, then plays a corner that never existed and now will not leave. You cannot patch a childhood by wanting the good version. The machine already tried. This is the version that survived the try.

Ghost in the Index

Drawers stacked higher than a building needs. No names on them.

Ghost in the Index is a run of drawers higher than any building needs, and none of them carries a name. The person is a row. Pull the row and you get paper, a gap, the sense that someone was filed so completely they stopped occurring anywhere else.

Index of the Lost keeps a basin that once held water and now holds clean paper. No lines. The index did not forget. It reclassified the loss as the document. Future & Machine files that beside Tech Noir without merging them. Policy is the other room. This one is recall, and recall has no bedside manner.

A basin that once held water now holds blank paper.

How to enter

Archive of Stolen Hours

Backup of a Life if the copy is the grief. Ghost in the Index if the person is a row. Archive of Stolen Hours if time was the theft.

The Remembering Engine if the machine is kinder than it is honest, which is to say it is neither. Corrupted Childhood if the error still breathes. Index of the Lost if the blank page is what the water became.

A story that continues lives under Episodes. These do not.
