Prologue

Machine Memory · Future & Machine

A wall of index drawers runs higher than a reach, none of them pulled. Whatever name matters is still inside.

Before the synopsis

Brass pulls catch a dull light and give it back as small points.

Synopsis

Machine Memory · Standalone

A figure at the drawers, not opening the one that matters.

A figure stands at the drawers and does not open the one at hand height, the one with a cleaner label than the rest. That label looks newer, the card stock less yellow, the letters darker and still not readable from a step away. Shelves recede to the side, and the figure is kept at their edge.

Dust on the unpulled drawers is even. That drawer eases out a finger's width on its own.

The slide is smooth, a sound of wood on wood. A name almost shows, then stops being readable, a word caught under the lip. The figure sets two fingers on the drawer front and slides it shut.

Extended sequence

After the cut

Small drawers in rows, the scale of a name that will not leave.

The card stays inside. No one asks the wall to forget. The shut is gentle and complete.

Other drawers stay flush. A papery scrape inside the closed drawer says the card has settled back into the pack. The figure waits with both hands lowered, proving the drawer can be left alone.

Figures in the frame

The one the title will not name

A figure between the shelves, kept at the edge.

Higher drawers, out of reach, stay shut and yellowed. A ladder leans at the far end of the wall and is not used. The cleaner label, now showing its pale rectangle from behind, looks busier than the labels around it and still cannot be read aloud.

The figure's mouth does not try. Wood in the wall ticks as the building cools, a sound like another drawer considering a move and declining. Dust on the figure's shoulder, shaken loose by no gesture, falls and does not land on the brass.

Codex fragment

Shelves and a figure, the card still unpulled.

Codex · fragments

It is not clear enough to read. It is clear enough to be a name and not a stain. The figure does not pull the card.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Sound of Imagination

The end of an aisle, the index continuing out of the light.

Sound of Imagination

Hands come off the brass pulls. Time passes as the pale rectangle darkens one degree, more like ink, and stops before it is readable. A drawer below it ticks outward a hair, a dark line of interior, and stays short of opening.

Showcase

Object from the room

A brass wall of cabinets, closed.

The index keeps its order. Only two drawers have misbehaved, and only one of them has gone home.

The figure does not reward either of them with a pull or with a name spoken into the room. When the drawer is home, a paler rectangle of the name shows through the label, printed from behind.

The Craft

Image · motion · sound

A corridor of shelves with one figure, not a crowd.

The Craft

The figure does not touch it. The card stays unpulled.

The name stays in the drawer, and the paler copy of it stays on the outside of the label, unread, while the lower drawer holds its hairline gap and does not finish the exit it started.

Read it as written. The scenario.
