Prologue

Machine Memory · Future & Machine

A cracked concrete basin fills a round hall. The waterline is a darker stain, and the stain is dry.

Watch

The screening is not on this page

Before the index had a name, something had already ended. The basin that once held water now holds paper. It moves like a river that has forgotten how to be wet. People stand at the edge as if borrowing time.

One line

Before the synopsis

Now the basin holds white paper ribbons, and the ribbons lie still under a hard light.

Synopsis

Machine Memory · Standalone

A round concrete hall, ribbons covering the floor under a hard light.

The light comes from the open roof and from nowhere else. A figure stands at the lip. The concrete there is worn smoother than the rest.

Above the hall, an eclipse is fixed in the open roof, dark center, bright ring, not moving. It does not travel the way a sky should.

The bright ring does not pulse. The ribbons find a current. They move like a river that has forgotten how to be wet, pouring toward a stair.

Extended sequence

After the cut

The hall full of ribbon. The figures do not gather it.

The sound is paper on paper, a dry rush. They cross the stair in one white sheet and run a corridor that leads up toward the eclipse. Edges of ribbon lift and slap down and lift again.

Other figures along the hall do not gather the paper. Their hands stay open and then close on nothing. A ribbon wraps the wrist of the figure at the lip and slips off again, leaving no mark.

Figures in the frame

At the lip

A stair crossed by a ribbon, the eclipse at the top.

The wrist shows the same skin it showed before the wrap. The basin's level drops. The stain of the old waterline appears above the paper, useless now.

The stair disappears under ribbon and then shows its edges again as the paper climbs. Grit on the treads flashes and vanishes. No one follows it up.

Codex fragment

A corridor of ribbons leading toward the eclipse.

Codex · fragments

A last ribbon leaves the cracked floor and joins the climb, and the concrete it leaves is bare, dusty, and without a new sheet. The figures remain at the lip and along the hall, hands at their sides, while the paper river spends itself toward the dark center overhead and does not come back down the stair. The hard light does not soften. A crack in the basin shows its full length once the paper has left it, and no water seeps from the crack.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Sound of Imagination

The head of a machine writing on a roll of blank paper.

Sound of Imagination

The eclipse's bright ring stays one width. Ribbons in the corridor bunch at a turn, loosen, and continue upward without a hand to free them. The figure at the lip watches the wrist the ribbon wrapped. The skin stays unmarked.

Showcase

Object from the room

Ribbon passing through the mechanism, no sentence on it.

A figure at the far curve of the hall takes one step toward the stair and puts the foot back. The ribbons do not slow for that almost-step.

The corridor stays full of moving ribbons. The eclipse stays at the top, ring bright, center dark, still not moving. The basin does not refill.

The Craft

Image · motion · sound

The machine feeding paper that stays empty.

The Craft

Another figure along the hall folds empty hands and does not stoop for a scrap. There is no scrap left to stoop for.

The stair's edges remain visible only in flashes between white sheets. Overhead the dark center does not spread and does not pass.

Read it as written. The scenario.

The next room

After this filing

The hall keeps its people at the sides while the paper spends itself up toward a sky that will not move. The next room is Glass Alley.
