Before the synopsis
The vapor moves the way slow water moves, a bright fold rising, a darker fold sinking.
Synopsis
Machine Memory · Standalone
Pendulum arms hang still above the rows, each arm stopped at a different idle, none of them agreeing on a rest. At the edge, a figure in a wool coat holds an unlit lantern. The glass of the lantern is cold.
The wick is black and unused. A sorting desk stands small at the right, bare except for an open ledger with nothing written on the page.
The page has lines ruled for entries and no entries on them. A pen lies in the gutter and is not picked up. No one asks for the hours back.
Extended sequence
After the cut

The figure does not lift the lantern. A collar ticks as metal cools. The gold in the nearest cylinder completes a turn and begins another, no brighter than the one before.
The figure's coat does not brush a single glass. Distance is kept the way a person keeps it when a thing is already finished. One pendulum swings, once.
Figures in the frame
The one the title will not name

The arm leaves its idle, passes the bottom, and climbs. A single cylinder's gold thins, as if an hour had gone out through the glass, the vapor paling from the center outward until the brass collar looks darker by comparison. The blank ledger does not gain a line.
The pen does not roll. The pendulum stops at the top of its arc and stays there, cocked, unwilling to fall. The thinned vapor refills from the base, higher and brighter than the cylinders beside it, until the glass looks overfull and still does not leak.
Codex fragment
Their arms remain at their separate idles. Time passes as the bright vapor turns faster than its neighbors, a small private weather inside one glass, while the row around it keeps the slower pace. The gold edge on the ledger fades as the vapor turns its bright side away, then returns, still without a mark. The cocked pendulum eases a finger's width back toward the vertical and stops again, short of a second pass.
The scenario is filed in the Codex.
Sound of Imagination
The brightest cylinder answers that easing with a brief dimming along one side, then recovers the extra gold and holds it. No mark appears on the ledger. The ruled lines stay empty. The figure's hand tightens once on the lantern handle and loosens.
Showcase
Object from the room

Light from that one cylinder reaches the ledger and stops at the paper, a gold edge along the ruling, and writes nothing. The figure's face stays turned away.
The lantern stays dark. The ledger stays open and blank. The other pendulums do not copy the one that moved.
The Craft
Image · motion · sound
The wick remains black. The brightest cylinder holds its extra gold.
No one reaches for it. The unlit lantern hangs in the figure's hand at the edge of the rows.

After this filing
The blank page does not receive the hour that left and came back, and the pendulum stays short of the fall it has not been willing to finish. The next room is The Remembering Engine.
