Prologue

Machine Memory · Future & Machine

A dark iron corridor runs longer than the plan pinned to the wall. The plan is a short hall and one door, ink already dry, corners pinned flat.

A hydraulic door stands ajar.

Synopsis

Machine Memory · Standalone

A blast door open a hand's width, violet leaking from a room beyond.

Violet shows in the copper seams, a thin light that does not illuminate the plan and does not need to. A figure in a canvas coat waits at the left edge, a receiver cabled from the coat into the wall. It ticks against the iron when the figure shifts and then goes still.

The plan still shows a short hall and one door. The corridor extends.

A new length of iron appears where the plan ends, plates seating themselves with a low lock. Each plate finds the last and the sound is the same sound, repeated, not hurried. At the end of that length, a circular rotunda holds doors in a pattern, and one door stands where the painted pattern on the floor has no door.

Extended sequence

After the cut

A circular iron rotunda, one door out of the pattern.

The paint on the floor is a circle of marks. The extra door breaks the circle by existing. The figure watches the plates finish and does not step onto the new length.

That door is open a hand's width. Violet leaks from the room beyond. In the hinge, a quartz spool turns once, and violet sits in the seam beside it.

Figures in the frame

The one the title will not name

A figure in a canvas coat at the edge, a receiver cabled into the wall.

The spool's turn is audible, a small bright scrape, and then it is done. The figure does not go closer. The plan on the wall does not redraw.

A pin at the plan's corner loosens and does not fall. The drawn hall stays short while the iron hall does not. The spool, already still, turns a fraction more and stops again.

Codex fragment

A dark iron hinge and a quartz spool, violet in the seam.

Codex · fragments

The receiver ticks once more, a single tick, and does not call up another length of plate. The figure's canvas coat does not take a step. The hydraulic door at the near end stays ajar by the amount it already had, and the new plates do not unseat themselves to agree with the pinned drawing. Violet leaks and does not widen the extra door.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Sound of Imagination

An analog earpiece against iron, dust still in the air.

Sound of Imagination

The quartz spool keeps the fraction it added and does not spend another. The loosened pin in the plan trembles when the receiver ticks and does not fall. The painted pattern on the floor still has no mark where the extra door stands.

Showcase

Object from the room

A hinge fragment and a quartz spool on a dark table, under one lamp.

That second fraction follows the first turn and does not become an entrance. Violet in the new seams holds at the brightness it reached and does not climb.

The extra door remains open by that hand's width. No hand draws it wider. The cable at the figure's coat stays live and stays still.

The Craft

Image · motion · sound

An empty corridor, violet at one end and a warm lamp at the other.

The Craft

Iron holds the longer length. The cable holds the figure to the left edge.

Nothing in the rotunda invites a closer wait than the one already being kept. The extra door remains open by that hand's width.

After this filing

The figure stays at the left edge with the receiver cabled in, and the corridor keeps the length the plan refuses. The next room is Backup of a Life.
