Synopsis

A figure with a lantern between the hanging cabinets.

Machine Memory · Standalone

Brass drawers hang in cloud. There is no floor. There is no building left to claim them. Between the cabinets, two people stay smaller than a single drawer, and neither of them reaches to open one.

The archive left the hall and took the weather with it. The cloud is not a background. It is the order the drawers still obey. One figure carries a lantern. The other carries a case that stays shut, because what is inside is not luggage. It is an hour that has not happened yet.

They open the lowest drawer. No document comes out. The sky of this day comes out, dated for tomorrow. The cabinet is not keeping the past. It is releasing the hour they are standing in, which is why the floor is gone. If they step onto the cloud, the drawer closes.

Extended sequence

A figure carrying a closed case along the floating archive.

After the cut

A lantern moves between the cabinets and does not light a room, because the room has already become weather. The case stays shut in the other hand. Opening it would spend the hour the drawer has dated for tomorrow.

After the cut the cabinets do not settle back into a building. One drawer remains a finger's width open. Light stands in it and does not fall.

Figures in the frame

The same walk, wider, the cabinets receding into cloud.

The two who do not open it

No names are filed. The frame keeps both of them smaller than the furniture, so the missing floor stays the subject. The portrait, if one is written, starts from that distance. The object in Showcase is the open drawer, not a face.

Codex fragment

The figure with the case, kept at the edge of the frame.

The sentence the camera would not hold: a drawer can contain tomorrow's sky, and the floor leaves so the sky has somewhere to go.

Sound of Imagination

One drawer pulled open onto a blade of light.

Brass ticking with nothing to strike. Paper shifting in a wind that is not in a room. The case, shut. No voice invited to read the date inside the light.

Sound of Imagination

Showcase

Open brass drawers, papers loose, cloud showing through them.

Object from the room

One drawer, open, and the light inside it dated ahead of the day. If The Drawers Left the Ground leaves the screen it leaves as that drawer, not as a likeness. It points back to the cloud.

The Craft

The cabinets from farther off, still with no floor beneath them.

Image · motion · sound

The papers loose in the drawers, the cloud showing through them. Still first. The held minute is the process, not the screening.
