Prologue

A man lives in one room, and the years show on the sill the way scores show on a desk: stones, ticket stubs, a row of pencils worn to different lengths, a cup with a hairline crack he still uses. He washes the cup, dries it, and puts it back on the same hook.

A bead of water sits in the hairline and does not run.

Synopsis

Ash Harlow

He does not look down the street for a vehicle that would carry him out of this life. The window gives him weather and returns it. He sits at the desk and copies a column of figures for a job that arrives by envelope.

The figures are ordinary. The envelope flap lies open while he copies and then settles closed when he is midway through the column.

At the middle of the afternoon he finds today's object in his pocket, a smooth stone from the stairwell, and he almost leaves it there as if this year did not need recording. Then he sets it at the end of the row on the sill. The row is longer than his hand.

Extended sequence

The sill, in order

The new stone is wet at one edge from the stair and begins to dry from that edge inward, a small change that follows the setting-down and does not remove the stone from the row. He stands at the door with his coat half considered, palm on the latch, and feels the old question rise, whether remaining is a mistake with a date on it. He takes the hand away.

He goes back to the column of figures and finishes the line he left. The pen completes the line. The latch stays where his hand left it.

The window

Years pass through it. He does not.

The new stone joins the others. The latch stays down. Late light lies across the desk, and the room keeps the man who kept it.

The bead in the cup's hairline dries without splitting the crack further. The pencils stay at their different lengths. The ticket stubs stay in their order.

Codex fragment

Codex dossier

Pencils worn to different lengths do not get sharpened to agree with one another. Ticket stubs stay a row. The newest stone, drying from the edge inward, stays at the end of a line already longer than his hand.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Sound of Imagination

Sound edition

Late light moves across the finished figures and does not point at the door. The coat on its peg does not get taken down. The latch does not lift.

The Showcase

The closed envelope stays closed. The street outside the window offers weather and no vehicle he rises to meet.

He remains at the desk with the finished line. The sill's row is longer than his hand by one stairwell stone, and the door's latch does not get a second visit. The hook holds the cracked cup at the same height as every other evening.

Image · Motion · Sound · Result

Weather at the window changes only as weather, and he does not stand up to follow it into the street. The envelope stays closed beside the column he completed.

The bead that dried in the hairline leaves the crack as it was.

The next room

After this filing

The room keeps its one man, and the man keeps the room by not opening the door. The next room is The Only Window.
