One line
Before the synopsis
The only window gives her the street in full: a cart, two walkers, a dog trotting after a noise.
Synopsis
Merrin Cole
The same look that shows her all of it also keeps it unreachable. Glass is the law of the distance. A smudge on the pane, old and thumb-sized, sits between her and the cart and does not wipe itself.
She dips her pen and enters a sum for a repair on a lower landing. She waits for the ink to take the paper before she moves to the next figure.
A shout rises from the corner, someone calling a name that is not hers. The shouter waves at a person Merrin can see and cannot join. The dog turns at the shout and then goes on.
Extended sequence
The pane, in order
Her hand goes to the latch and rests there. Leaving would turn the pane into a lesson, and she does not lift the latch. The walkers separate.
One of them looks back once and does not look up. She takes her hand back, a small withdrawal that changes the afternoon from a pause into a decision renewed. Where her fingers rested, a brief fog of warmth fades off the latch.

Figures in the frame
Merrin Cole

The glass
The column of figures waits, indifferent and exact. She finishes the line, blots it, and rules it off. The ruled line is straight.
Below it, the next line stays empty, and she does not start a sum she has not been given. That empty line follows the decision at the latch: the page will hold what the building still counts, and nothing the street asked of her. Below, a bell in the hall rings for a resident who still answers to a number.
Codex fragment
Merrin dips the pen and does not touch the empty line. The blotter holds the finished sum and nothing under it. Outside, a second errand crosses from the same awning to the same awning, and she lets that crossing replace the first without opening the latch.
The scenario is filed in the Codex.
Sound of Imagination
Glass. Traffic that does not look up.
The bell below does not ring a third time. No voice comes up the stair with her name or with a number meant for her. The thumb-sized smudge stays on the pane.
Showcase
Object

The bell rings a second time, the same number of strikes, and stops. No one calls up for Merrin.
The street refills with ordinary errands. She watches one of them cross from awning to awning and lets the watching be the whole of her contact. The smudge on the pane remains between her and whatever replaces them.

The next room
After this filing
The latch stays down, and the street continues on the far side of the glass. The next room is Miles From Any Voice.
