Miles From Any Voice

Prologue
A man drives a long route between places that do not gather into a life. The cab is clean, the passenger seat empty, the radio a dead switch he checks the way a person checks a fact.

Synopsis
Bram Calder
A fence post passes, then another, none of them with a name. A town appears as a water tower and a closed fuel bay and falls behind without welcoming him. The tower's shadow crosses the hood and is gone.
He does not slow for a conversation the shoulder does not offer. His hands stay at ten and two. Halfway up a grade the radio coughs once.
A voice, a woman's, says half a word, a direction or a name, and is gone. The half-word has no second half. He holds the switch up with his thumb and counts, silent, to ten.
Extended sequence
The miles, in order
The speaker gives him the rush of a wire and then true silence. The rush is not a voice. He nods, as if the measurement were complete, and lets the switch fall. No second person climbs into the emptiness beside him to explain it.
Another stretch of road presents itself, competent and unmarked by anyone who knows him. The empty seat takes the light and gives it back to the dash. He keeps both hands on the wheel.

The road
Distance that noise cannot cross.
The half-word does not return. He does not flip the switch up again to beg a repeat. Distance stays in the cab after the brief accident of sound, a distance noise could not cross and will not be asked to cross again before dark. The fuel gauge holds a steady middle.
A bug meets the glass and stays there, small and done. He does not stop to clear it. The dead switch stays down under the dust.
Codex fragment
The next mile looks like the last mile. The switch stays down. Light on the empty seat moves as the road moves and never arranges itself into a passenger. The radio does not speak.
The scenario is filed in the Codex.
Sound of Imagination
The country does not gather. He does not name the town the water tower belonged to. Naming it would make the route a place, and the route stays a route. The dead switch gathers no new dust in the minute he refuses it.
Showcase
Object

The dust is a thin grey his thumb did not wipe. The empty seat holds the light, and the route continues without becoming anyone's home. Dry country keeps its posts.
No second cough comes from the speaker. The cab stays a cab for one, clean and measured, and the half-word remains a half-word that the road will not finish for him. The grade is behind him.
The Craft
The Craft · Isolation
Image · Motion · Sound · Result
The empty seat's light slides from cushion to belt buckle and back as the road bends. No voice finishes the half-word.
His hands remain on the wheel. Dry country remains dry.

The next room
After this filing
The cab carries one person and a measurement that already ended, and the miles do not turn the silence into company. The next room is Apartment 47.
