The Unfinished Apology
Key art
Prologue
Julian Marsh is exact with other people's sentences. A manuscript lies in a tidy stack, commas settled, and beside it a single page in his own hand, an apology worked down to its last word.

Synopsis
Julian Marsh
The last word is the last word. He does not add a sentence after it. For months the delay felt like a resource.
This morning it is only paper. He slides the page into an envelope and writes a name he has edited around for a long time. The name fits the envelope.
He takes it to the building where she kept a room. The stair is ordinary. The bell board shows a blank in the place of her name.
Extended sequence
The desk, in order
The blank is a cleaner rectangle among names that are still posted. He presses the button anyway. The button sticks a little and then gives.
A stranger opens the downstairs door, hears the name, and shakes his head. She is not available to hear a correction. The stranger is polite and finished.

Sable Renn
The blank on the board does not fill in because the button was pressed. Julian stands with the envelope and no slot that belongs to the apology. He does not leave it in a general box.
He puts it back inside his coat. The coat takes the thickness of one sealed page and looks no different. At his desk again, he takes the page out so it will not crease into something that looks sent.
Codex fragment
The apology is complete as prose and useless in the world. The page stays centered and unmailed. The blank on the bell board, across town, remains a blank, and his lamp burns over words no one will answer. The broken seal stays on the desk beside the envelope he does not use again.
The scenario is filed in the Codex.
Sound of Imagination
Other people's commas stay settled in their stack, and his own last word stays the last word, read by no one but the man who wrote it. The lamp makes a small gold on the centered page and does not make a reader. Julian's hands stay off the paper so the centering will last. The envelope with the broken seal lies to one side, name still written, slot still nowhere.

Object

The seal breaks cleanly. He lays it centered on the blotter.
A corner wants to curl from the coat's warmth, and he flattens it. The curl does not return, a small compliance that follows the unsealing and does not become delivery. The manuscript of other people's finished thoughts waits at his elbow, already better timed than his.
The Craft
The Craft · Tragedy
Image · Motion · Sound · Result
He does not copy the apology into a cleaner draft that would look more sendable. The stranger's door, across town, stays shut.
The cleaner rectangle on the bell board stays cleaner than the names around it. Commas in the manuscript do not migrate onto his page to improve it.
