Sound of Imagination

The Long Listening

Every filed tone, in one sitting

The sitting

A dark frame held open, as if the picture had stepped aside for the tone.

The scores have been living in separate rooms. A film keeps one. A climate keeps another. A few were never given a picture at all. This room puts them in a single order, so a person can stay with the sound after the picture has gone.

It is a sitting, not a shuffle and not a shop. The file that is playing is the file that was filed. When it ends, the next one begins. Nothing is inserted between them.

One player

A pulse of light in a dark hall, the only moving thing.

There is one player. Press a title and that file starts. Press the player itself and the sitting begins at the top. On a phone, the player stays with the page. You do not leave for another app, and you do not lose the room you were in.

81 songs are in the order below. The names are the names of the files. Where a tone already belongs to a room, the gold line opens that room. Where it does not, the tone is still kept.

The order

A library aisle with a thin light and no one walking it.

The list runs by the name of the file. Room tones and generated sounds are not in it. What remains is music: a song long enough to sit with, not a noise filed as atmosphere.

The room a tone belongs to

A desk in a dim archive, papers waiting and no one seated.

A score is not a coat of paint on a film. If the line beside a title is gold, that is the room the file was bound to. Open it when you want the picture back. Stay here when you want only the frequency. The sitting does not close the other door.

Some files were made for a series and still carry the old name of that work. Some were made for a house and never grew a scene. Both stay in the order. The archive does not promote one into a single and hide the other.

After the last file

When the last file ends, the sitting stops. It does not start again by itself, and it does not offer a louder version of what you just heard. You can return to any title. The player will take it from there and continue downward.

If a new score is added to the archive, it belongs in this order only after it has been filed. A file left in a folder without a name in the room is not yet part of the sitting.

The last frame gone dark, a trace of sound still in the room. A circular lens on a dark ground, holding a small bright centre.
