Overview

Folklore — World and Myth | Aestas Infinity

Climate

Folklore in World & Myth: village truth, border paths, names that should not be spoken after dark. Standalone House films — series chapters live under Episodes.

A path runs between two villages that never trade. Chalk every seven steps, and nobody remembers who put the first mark. At dusk a door opens on a tunnel that was not on any side of the house. A crown hangs in one shaft of light and will not be taken. Another door stands open onto stars and stops being a way back. Overhead a serpent of stars moves one joint. By morning the same shape is scratched in frost. No hand did it.

None of these need a city. The border is the set.

The principle

The village rule outlives the teller. The door should stay single.

The village rule that outlives the teller. Folklore in Aestas Infinity is a path between villages, a story told at dusk, a door that should stay single.

The teller can die. The mark cannot. A cairn knocked down before dusk is knocked down again. A name written in the frost is not a story you may repeat after dark. The door that should stay single still shows the path, and no longer returns the sound of it.

Path

The path between villages. The border is the set.

The Path Between Villages runs between two villages that never trade directly. Everyone uses it. No one maintains it. The hedgerows are too high to see over. Chalk marks — a circle, three lines, a double triangle — repeat every seven steps. Cairns. Straw dolls tied with black thread. The lantern at the bend does not go out. Footprints ahead of a walker stop in the middle of the path, as if someone stepped into the hedge. The hedge does not open. The third cairn from the village is always knocked down, even if you rebuild it before dusk.

Story Told at Dusk is told at the door, and then the door is not that door. A kerosene lantern, a bowl, herbs, a stone. Beyond the frame the sky is mauve. That is the story as it is told. Then the opening gives onto wet earth. A passage. Moss. A second dark mouth further in. It was not on any side of the house. He goes through. The light he brought does not.

Path Between Villages

Dust Crown

A hand rises. The crown hangs in the light. The prints stop before it.

Dust Crown hangs in one shaft of light, and nothing else in the hall still has a name. The crown is intact. It is heavy with gems. It has not rusted into the stone. The floor under it is broken. Footprints come out of the dark and stop where the light begins. No one claims it. When a hand finally rises, the crown sinks an inch into empty air. The light goes first. The crown stays.

The Single Door is a stone threshold framed in bone and horn. It stands open onto a field of stars. From this side the air is cold. From the other side nothing comes back. No sound. No wind. No name. Behind the step the village path is still there. They step through. The door does not close. It simply stops being a way back.

The single door. One threshold.

Name

Written sky. The names are overhead.

Written Sky is a serpent of stars coiled above a small stone shrine. The body is constellations. The eyes are blue fire. Elders watch from the ridge. No one says the pattern out loud. Names that should not be spoken after dark. The sky rearranges one joint of the coil. By morning the same shape is scratched into the frost on the shrine door, and no hand did it. Below, the path has a new fork. No map has it.

After the Gods is not atheism; it is what the village does when the altar is empty and the rule remains. A dark altar room. Black candles. A brass bowl of dried herbs. The rite is over. A hand reaches to empty the bowl. The herbs shift once, as if they are still listening, and then they fall still. Every candle goes out. No voice. The marks on the walls are only marks.

When the altar is empty, the rule remains.

How to enter

Names should not be spoken after dark.

Names that should not be spoken after dark. Story Told at Dusk if you can sit with a telling that does not comfort. The Single Door if one threshold is enough. After the Gods if the climate is absence with manners.

The Path Between Villages if the border is the whole plot. Dust Crown if the light is the refusal. Written Sky if the pattern is already overhead.

A story that continues lives under Episodes. These do not.
