One line

Before the synopsis

A hooded person waits with their back to the table, one hand on the jamb.

Synopsis

Above the lintel the sky is that same mauve. What lies past the threshold should be the yard and the fence. The lantern's flame stands straight.

The herbs do not stir. The river stone throws a small dull shine and does not roll.

The hooded person does not look back at the table. The hand on the jamb is still. Mauve light and lantern light meet on the floorboards and do not mix cleanly.

Extended sequence

After the cut

The door opens onto a tunnel of wet earth. Snow in a room shot full of holes.

Minutes pass as the flame consuming a little fuel, the level sinking by less than a finger, and the doorway holding a yard that is about to stop being a yard. A fence post shows, ordinary, and then the ordinary begins to fail at its edges. The bowl on the table holds nothing that steams.

The herbs keep their tie. The hooded person sets the door wider. The opening becomes a tunnel of wet earth, roots in the walls.

Figures in the frame

At the edge

A hooded back, a hand on the doorframe, dusk outside and a lamp still burning inside.

Cool air comes in and bends the flame. They draw the door inward again, and the opening becomes a room full of snow, the walls pierced with holes. They let go of the edge.

Now the next room is web from beam to beam, a single stool, and a shelf no hand has disturbed. The mauve sky remains above the top of all three sights at once. The hand finds the jamb again, because the wood is still there even when the view is not.

Codex fragment

What the still would not say

The river stone leaves the table, follows the fall, and stops against the lantern's base. The herbs stay on the table, tied, the only objects that did not go through the opening. The bowl rocks once and settles. Kerosene darkens the dirt in a small tongue and stops before the broken board.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Sound of Imagination

Before the score

The flame uses what spilled and does not grow. Web holds the stool and the untouched shelf in the next room. A single strand sags toward the stool and stops short of the seat.

Showcase

Object from the room

A fallen lantern and a broken length of the door, in the dirt.

The lantern tips and falls. A broken length of the door lands in the dirt beside it.

The flame does not go out. It burns on its side in the dirt, smaller, and does not crawl. The hooded hand stays on the splintered jamb.

The Craft

Story Told at Dusk — the earlier key still

The fallen lantern burns in the dirt under the mauve sky, and the broken board lies still where it struck. The river stone rests at the lantern's side.

The hooded hand does not leave the splintered wood to pick any of it up. Above the lintel the mauve does not choose among the rooms.

Read it as written. The scenario.
