The Path Between Villages
Key art
The plate is dusk and a fine rain. Two villages sit in one view. Smoke from each roof rises straight and leans toward neither. Between them a worn mud path, unmended. At the fork, three offerings and no fourth: grey grain, a tied bundle of sticks, one bowl of rain. In the dirt, chalk: a circle, three lines, a double triangle. The lantern in the hedge is still dark. No one is on the path.
Prologue
Two villages sit within sight of each other at dusk. Smoke rises from each roof and leans toward neither.
The hour is overcast and blue-grey, with no sunbeam. Hedges hold a fine rain. The path between the roofs is empty. The offerings are already there, small in the wide.

Dusk, fine rain, one path, two villages. A man of forty walks it with empty hands. A lantern lights a straw doll with no hand on the wire. By the end both ends of the path are empty, and the lantern is still burning. One place. The player is still empty.
One line
Before the synopsis
Between them a path runs that every traveler uses and nobody mends.
Mud, hedge, and the two smokes. The chalk is already white on the wet earth, the same mark every seven steps: a circle, three lines, a double triangle. The lantern has not been lit. The path is empty, and the path is the subject.
Synopsis
He is forty, seen from behind, charcoal wool, hair damp from the rain. Grey grain, a bundle of sticks, a bowl of rain. Every seven steps the chalk repeats: a circle, three lines, a double triangle.
A man comes with empty hands and leaves the heap as he found it. His boot scuffs a line. The line holds. A drop hits the bowl, travels out, and draws back in.
Extended sequence
After the cut
The lantern lights and shows the straw doll. No hand is on the wire. At the fork the far figure is gone. Another adult waits where he began, off the chalk. A cairn stone slips and stops against his track. Ahead, the next chalk is already wet.

Who remains
The man, forty, keeps both hands empty. A dark coat at the far end is gone when he arrives. The second adult is too far for a face, and waits off the chalk.
Charcoal wool, damp hair, a pale sole. He is seen from behind. The second adult wears ordinary dark clothes and stands where the man began, off the chalk. The far windows stay black.
Codex fragment
Filed with the room
Chalk prints his sole and smears off on the next ordinary step. A dog barks in the near village. The far village gives no answer.
The sole is pale, so the chalk can print a circle and a line. The dog is at the near hedge, mouth open. The far roofs answer with straight smoke and dark windows, and with nothing else.
The scenario is filed in the Codex.
Sound of Imagination
Residual
Rain in the hedge. The bowl taking a drop back. Lantern glass warming. One dog, and then the other village quiet.
The dog is small, on the near side, by the hedge. The far village is dark windows. The lantern has just taken a small flame, and the glass is warming. The rain stays fine. The bowl pulls its ring inward.
Residual scores belong with Sound of Imagination.
Showcase
Object from the universe
The post stays in the hedge. What leaves is small enough to hold: a straw doll, a sprig of rowan with a few dark-red berries, one feather, one bone, and a short length of the wire, rust still in the grain.
The lantern stays outside this frame. No flame here.
The Craft
Image · motion · sound
Both ends of the path are empty. The lantern burns on. The bowl holds its rain. The chalk waits, wet.
Fine rain continues. The villages sit at both edges, and the smoke is still straight. The flame is small. Ahead of where anyone stood, the mark is the same circle, three lines, and double triangle.
Read it as written in the scenario. The shot list is filed beside it.

World & Myth · Folklore
The Path Between Villages is filed in World & Myth, under Folklore.
The house keeps the path, not a festival. In that room the two smokes are small, the three offerings sit where the roads meet, and the dusk around them is the room itself.
The next room
After this filing
The feather has turned once on its wire and stopped. The next room is Story Told at Dusk.
The lantern is still lit. The feather rests where the turn ended. The path in front of the post is empty. That is the last thing this room keeps.
