Before the synopsis

The workshop Tamsin Rook fired kilns for no longer stands; beyond a broken jamb there is only open daylight and a cleared foundation.

Synopsis

Tamsin Rook

What the room kept is a single cup on a scorched sill, clay gone dull, handle whole. Ash in the corners does not lift. The smell of spent fuel is in the plaster and does not perform a fire.

Tamsin picks the cup up because it is what remains. The clay is cool now.

The room remembers heat in its stain and its smell of spent fuel, and it does not perform the fire. She turns the cup once. A hairline runs under the glaze and does not leak, because there is nothing in it.

Extended sequence

After heat, in order

Her fingers leave a faint warmer patch on the dull clay and the patch fades. The hairline shows a little more of itself as that warmth leaves, still dry, a small further crack that follows the handling and does not become a leak. On a nail hangs a bit of pale cloth, the sort used to set a piece apart for looking.

She takes it down, holds it under the cup, and then puts the cloth back on the nail. The cloth hangs as it hung. Promoting the cup into a meaning would be a kind of rebuild, and she does not rebuild.

The cup

She sets the cup on the sill again, off center, where her fingers found it. A flake of black plaster lets go of the wall and stops on the sill short of the cup. She does not sweep it off and does not move the cup toward it.

Daylight from the missing workshop stays flat and fireless. The plaster keeps its black. The cup keeps its crack and its ordinary weight.

Codex fragment

Codex dossier

The hairline stays dry. The cloth stays on the nail, and the gone workshop stays gone. Tamsin does not pick the cup up again. Off center is where her fingers left it, and off center is where it stays.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Sound of Imagination

Ash quiet. One object that stayed.

Sound edition

Daylight from the cleared foundation does not warm the clay back into a kiln color. The blackened plaster keeps the uneven line where the heat stopped and does not climb higher. The pale cloth on the nail does not get taken down a second time. Ash in the corners stays in the corners.

The Showcase

The pale cloth keeps its nail. The foundation outside stays cleared.

No kiln shape returns in the daylight to give the cup a job. The cup sits alone on the scorched sill, with no flame anywhere in the room. The flake of plaster stays short of it.

The Craft

The Craft · Aftermath / Ruin

Image · Motion · Sound · Result

The hairline under the glaze catches the flat light and still does not leak. The flake of plaster on the sill stays short of the cup, a small black beside a dull handle that is still whole.

No flame starts in the stain. No rebuild starts in her hands.
