The Threshold

A doorway with no walls

Key art

A wooden doorway standing alone in a field, its shadow long and pointed back toward the road.

Allegory / Symbolic · Standalone · Upcoming

The plate is the field at flat noon. A wooden frame stands in tall dry grass, with no door in it and no wall behind it. The sun is high. Every stem throws a short shadow. The doorway's shadow is long, cool, and pointed back toward the dirt road. Near wood is warm oak. Far wood is the color of shade. The sky is the same pale noon on both sides. Through the frame the grass is darker and wet. No one has arrived.

Prologue

A wooden doorway stands in tall grass at noon. Its shadow lies long and cool, back toward the road, while every stem around it throws a short shadow.

The near grass is dry and straw-gold. The road is only a pale line at the edge of the field. The opening ends before anyone reaches the wood.

Watch

A woman of forty steps through the doorway. A man of fifty is behind her. A traveler of thirty stays back on the road, arms folded.

One noon, one field, and the frame that was planted in it. A woman of forty crosses. A man of fifty tests the sill. A traveler of thirty takes the long grass around the wood. The hour stays in this place. The picture is on the shelf. The player is still empty.

One line

Before the synopsis

A woman of forty in an open olive coat slows at the doorway and looks at the wood.

A woman with a satchel slows at a door that has no wall.

She is forty. The coat is dull olive and still open, a leather satchel on one shoulder, hair off her face. She looks at the wood. Noon is hard on the near jamb and already cool on the far one.

Synopsis

She steps through the warm near jamb. A grasshopper is in the air. The far jamb is cooler.

A woman of forty, olive coat open, satchel on one shoulder, has reached the wood. The near jamb is warm from the hour. The far jamb is night-cool. A grasshopper jumps for the far grass and comes down again on the near side.

She steps through. Her shoulders drop, the grass sounds heavy, and the stems around her boots bend against the field. Her own shadow stays a noon shadow. The doorway's stays long.

Extended sequence

Two seed heads bow inside the doorway. The rest of the grass is still.

Two seed heads bow the wrong way, one after the other, with the rest of the grass still.

She walks back through. The bend follows her in a strip the width of her body. A man compares his two hands, one in each shadow. A twig rolls to the long shadow and stops. A cloud crosses the sun. The other shadows swing back to noon. The doorway's shadow stays on the road it chose.

A dry twig has stopped in the grass beside the doorway. The long shadow stays on the road.

Figures in the frame

One boot on the sill, the other in the grass. She has left. The third traveler takes the long way around.

The woman, forty, has already crossed and come back. The man, fifty, sets one boot on the sill and leaves the other in the near grass. A third traveler, thirty, takes the long way around.

Her coat is dull olive and still open. The satchel is damp along the bottom. His shirt is lighter than her coat, so the grey on one hand is the long shadow, not the sleeve. The traveler wears a plain jacket and stays clear of the wood.

Codex fragment

She keeps walking. The doorway is already small behind her. He stands at the sill, mouth closed. Nothing is written in the grass between them.

He says a name. She keeps walking. The name stays in the grass between them.

Noon is still high. The doorway is already small behind her. He stands at the sill in the lighter shirt, and his mouth is closed again. The grass between them holds the distance, and nothing written.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Sound of Imagination

The man at the sill, one boot on the wood, the foot in it. Dry grass near, darker grass through the frame. One traveler walks the dry way around.

Dry grass on the near side. Wet grass through the frame. The man is at the sill, one boot on the wood, the foot in it.

The near stems are thin and pale. The stems through the frame are heavier and dark. Farther off, one traveler walks the dry way around, both boots on his feet. The sky adds nothing.

Showcase

A piece of the sill, the dark print on the warm face, kept as the object from the field.

The doorway stays in the grass. It is two metres of field, and it is not for sale.

What leaves is a piece of the sill, small enough to hold. Warm oak on the near face, night-cool grey on the cut. A dark print sits only on that near face. The rest of the frame stays where it was planted.

The Craft

The woman is small on the road. The man remains by the post. Only the doorway's shadow refuses the hour.

The woman is small on the road. The man remains by the post. Noon is bright on the grass. Only the doorway's shadow refuses the hour.

The post is the near jamb. She has reached the dirt road. He has stayed with the wood. The stem-shadows are short again. The long cool shadow still points back toward her.

Read it as written in the scenario. The shot list is filed beside it.

Filed in The Houses

The Threshold is filed in Allegory / Symbolic, under Dream & Symbol.

The house keeps the doorway among signs that refuse to explain themselves. In that room the frame is smaller, set on quiet stone, and the field is only what still shows through the wood. The long shadow points at the same road.

The next room

After this filing

The satchel is pulled close against her coat. The next room is The Cut That Refuses.

She is on the dirt road. The olive coat is pulled closed, and the satchel sits tight against it. The doorway is already far. Its shadow still points back the way she came.
