FADE IN:

EXT. OPEN FIELD — NOON

Tall grass. Flat noon light. No wall in sight.

A wooden DOORWAY stands in the middle of the field, frame only. The sill is worn smooth by feet that are not here.

Its SHADOW lies wrong: long, cool, pointing back toward the road the sun has already left. Every stem around it throws a short noon shadow.

A WOMAN (40s) cuts across on a shortcut, a satchel on one shoulder. She slows at the door.

A MAN (50s) stops behind her, curious. A THIRD TRAVELER (30s) hangs back, arms folded.

The woman sets her palm on the near jamb. The wood is warm from the hour. She reaches through and touches the far jamb. That wood is cool, night-cool, while the near jamb is warm from the noon.

A grasshopper rests on the sill. It jumps for the far grass, turns in the air, and comes down again on the near side.

She listens. On the near side the grass ticks dry and thin. Through the frame it ticks wet, though the sky over both sides is the same clear noon.

She steps through.

On the far side her shoulders drop. The grass sounds heavy and close. The satchel drags at one shoulder. Around her boots the stems bend against the lie of the rest of the field.

She looks down. Her own shadow, over there, is a short noon shadow. The doorway's shadow, beside it, stays long.

A seed head on the far side bows the wrong way. A second seed head, a step farther, bows after it. No wind moves the rest.

She turns and walks back through, slower. She passes the man and the traveler without a word. The wrong bend follows her out and stays in a strip the width of her body.

The man holds one hand in his noon shadow and the other in the doorway's. One palm stays bright. The other goes grey. He checks the sun. It has not traveled far enough to make both hands true.

The third traveler drops a dry twig. It rolls toward the frame and stops at the edge of the long shadow.

A thin cloud crosses the sun. Stem-shadows swing and settle back to noon. The doorway's shadow stays on the road it already chose.

The man says a name. She keeps walking. The name drops into the grass between them and stays there.

The man sets one boot on the sill. The second foot stays in the near grass. His jaw tightens. He steps off. The toe leaves a dark print on the near side. Past the sill, the grass holds none.

The third traveler takes the long way around the frame, boots loud in ordinary grass.

The woman is already small on the road, the satchel pulled close against her coat.

The man remains by the post. Noon lies bright on every blade. Only the doorway's shadow refuses the hour.

FADE OUT.

Shooting script

Scene 1. Open field. Noon. 2:57. 16:9.

The scene above is the shooting script. One place. One hour. It stays one scene.

A wooden frame stands in the grass. No door in it. No wall behind it. Three adults cross the field: a woman of forty with a satchel, a man of fifty, a traveler of thirty. The man says a name. The name is heard. It is never written and never subtitled.

The sky is the same clear noon on both sides of the frame. The near jamb is warm from the hour. The far jamb is night-cool. The near grass is dry. The grass through the frame is wet.

Breakdown

What this noon has to hold.

Cast. Woman, 40s. Man, 50s. Third traveler, 30s.

The frame. Two jambs, a head, a worn sill. Wood. No door leaf, no hinge that reads as a house, no number, no carving.

The field. Tall dry grass on the near side. A wet strip through the frame, dark enough to tick and to bend. Two seed heads on that strip, bowed on a cue. One dry twig. After she walks back, a strip the width of her body stays bent.

The wrong shadow. Long and cool. It stays when the thin cloud moves the shadows of the stems.

Creature. One grasshopper on the sill. It jumps for the far grass and lands on the near side.

Lookbook

One noon, split by a frame.

The sky stays one color. The wood and the grass split. Hard noon, high, so the honest shadows are short. The doorway's shadow is a second, cooler source, and it points back toward the road.

Palette

Dry straw gold. #C6A85A. Near grass in the sun.

Pale grass. #8C8A52. The ordinary field.

Warm near wood. #A56B3C. The jamb she touches first.

Bright palm. #E6CBA8. The hand in the true noon shadow.

Clear noon sky. #D7D5CE. Both sides of the frame.

Short noon shadow. #6E6A60. Stems, and her own shadow.

Wet far grass. #3E5A48. Only through the doorway.

Night-cool wood. #6A7C86. The far jamb.

Wrong long shadow. #3C4852. Cool, and too long.

Boot print. #241E18. Near side only.

Lens

Wide on the field. Close on the hands, the grass, and the twig. Past the frame the field is the same, only wetter, and wrong.

Costume

Three people dressed for a walk.

Woman, 40s. A coat she can pull closed at the end, in dull olive, dust brown, or faded blue. A leather satchel on one shoulder. It drags on the far side and sits close against the coat on the road. Boots that have walked. Hair off the face. No ornament.

Man, 50s. Shirt and trousers lighter than her coat, so the grey on one hand is the shadow, not the sleeve. One boot that can take a dark print.

Traveler, 30s. A plain jacket, arms free to fold. Nothing on him brighter than the doorway.

One continuous noon. The coat is open while she crosses. It is pulled close only in the last wide shot. The satchel stays on the same shoulder.

Design

A frame and a field.

The doorway is two jambs, a head, and a sill worn smooth in the middle. It stands alone in the grass. The near face of the wood is warm. The far face is cooler.

The near grass is ordinary and dry. Through the frame, the stems are heavier and darker. Two seed heads there bow on a cue. The road at the edge is dirt, and it only has to exist in the last shot.

One dry twig, light enough to roll and stop at the shadow. The spoken name leaves nothing written in the grass.

Makeup and hair

Noon on the skin. The story is in the hands.

Hard sun. A little shine on the forehead. The story is in the hands, not in the paint.

One palm takes the warm jamb. The other takes the cool. The grey on the man's far hand is the long shadow. His jaw tightens when the boot leaves the sill.

Her hair stays off the face. A few strands catch the wet grass. The coat is open while she crosses, and pulled close on the road.

Sound

Two grasses, one sky.

Dry tick. The near side. Thin, sparse, close.

Wet tick. Only through the frame. Heavier, and closer together.

Palms. A small warm tap on the near jamb. A duller touch on the far one.

Grasshopper. One takeoff. One landing.

The step through. Boot on the sill, then a softer, wetter step. Stems brush. They are not a crowd.

The twig. A dry roll, then a stop.

The name. One word, the man's voice, at a little distance. She gives no answer.

The last wide. Dry tick only. She has gone, and the wet tick has gone with her. The doorway stays quiet.
