The Cut That Refuses
Key art
Prologue
A woman runs the length of a narrow hall, keys in her fist, toward a door at the end that should open onto the stair. A man's voice behind her asks her name and then asks it again, the second question landing on the same instant as the first.

She reaches the door.
Synopsis
Her knuckles meet the wood. The sound of the knock goes on down the stairwell, clear and finished, while she remains in the hall with her hand still raised, the door neither open nor refused. The boards under them are the same boards they started on.
A runner rug does not slide. The keys are warm from her fist. The hall holds the knock as a thing already delivered and the two of them as a thing not delivered.
Minutes, if they are minutes, do not stack. The light from a window at the side stays the same strength. Neither of them looks at that window to prove time.
Extended sequence
Their faces stay on the brink. He catches up and stops a step behind her. His mouth shapes the next word.
No answer comes out of him, and none comes out of her. The knock has already traveled. They wait for the moment to become the next moment.
Figures in the frame
The keys tick against each other and that small sound continues while their faces stay held on the brink of a reply. A key in her fist turns a fraction, as if a lock had asked for it, and then sticks. The tick of metal on metal stops.
That small arrest follows the knock that left without them. The door in front of them still has not chosen. Somewhere below, the knock arrives at a landing and is answered by a distant hinge, a door that is not this door.
Codex fragment
The hinge downstairs finishes its swing, and the hall keeps them where the joining failed. The key that turned a fraction stays turned that fraction. No further sound climbs back up the stair to collect them. The two of them remain at the door with the knock already spent elsewhere.
The scenario is filed in the Codex.
Sound of Imagination
His mouth stays shut. Her palm stays on the wood, and the hall does not give them the next moment the stairwell already used. The side window keeps the same daylight it had when she started to run. Neither of them uses that sameness as a reason to try the door again.
Showcase
In the hall the two of them are still at the same board, the same unfinished breath between them. The distant hinge is clear.
Their own door's hinge does not copy it. His hand lifts a little and returns to his side without touching her and without touching the wood. Her hand rises once more and rests on the wood without striking.
The Craft
His shoes stay planted one step behind her heels. The runner rug shows no new scuff from a crossing that did not happen.
Downstairs the distant door, having swung, gives no second sound. The keys in her fist are warm and still.
Read it as written. The scenario.
