The Heart of the World Tree

A heart grown to hold the sky

Key art

A wooden heart hung in the roots, light in the grain

High Fantasy · Standalone · Upcoming

Prologue

Deep inside the World Tree the core is not ordinary timber. A wooden heart hangs among the great roots, and light moves in the grain, slow and steady, with no sap showing yet.

One line

Before the synopsis

The Root Keeper stands at the heart's edge, moss thick on the cloak, both hands kept back from the wood.

Synopsis

The tunnel smells of wet root and cold stone. No wind moves the moss. The heart's grain brightens along one line and dims along another, a pulse with no drip.

She does not count the pulse. Her boots stay on the root floor, which is dry under the heart.

The light in the grain completes several slow travels before the wood decides anything. A root nearby creaks and settles. Minutes pass as that creak fading and as the heart staying whole.

Extended sequence

After the cut

The heart split open, sap in the crack, the root tunnel still lit

The keeper's hands remain behind her, fingers locked in the moss of her own cloak so they will not reach early. The tunnel beyond her stays dark. She watches the grain, not the dark.

The heart splits along its centre with a low tick. Golden sap stands in the crack and does not drip to the root floor. Through the split a small piece of sky shows, blue and held, not an opening onto weather outside the tree but a piece the wood has grown in order to keep.

Who remains

The Root Keeper at the edge of the heart, moss on the cloak

The tunnel stays lit by the grain alone. The keeper's moss-cloak does not stir. She watches the crack and not the dark behind her.

A loose shard comes away into the keeper's hand without a pull, sap still bright in its veins. She does not pry for a second piece. The sap in the shard dims one shade.

Codex fragment

Filed with the room

It did not grow a heart in order to live. It grew a heart so the world would have somewhere to place its ear when the sky goes quiet. Fragments

The root that creaked does not creak again. Moss on her cloak stays thick and unmoved. The sky in the wood keeps its blue. The shard in her hand keeps its dimmer gold.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Sound of Imagination

Residual

Bark splitting. Sap thickening as it falls. A wooden thud, slower than any chest. Far off, spores, and the hum of roots holding the sky up. Sound of Imagination

She remains at the edge with the second piece unasked, and the heart hangs steady on the root that holds it. The root floor stays dry under the crack. Golden sap does not give the stone a stain.

Showcase

Object from the universe

A piece of the wooden heart, golden sap still in the veins

A split of the wooden heart, golden sap still bright in the grain, moss on the cut edge. Lifted out of the root, not carved for a shelf. The Showcase

The sap in the crack does not. That difference follows the shard leaving the heart.

She does not tip the shard to make it drip. The heart sways once on its root and steadies. The scrap of sky in the crack does not dim, and the gold in the open wood holds where the split has stopped.

The Craft

Image · motion · sound

The Heart of the World Tree — the earlier key still

The heart is held still before it is allowed to beat. Motion is the sap, and that one louder pulse. What the room keeps is the amber. The Craft

The keeper's moss-cloak hangs with its own weight and does not reach for the wood she refused to pull. Blue in the split is a small held piece, not a weather the tunnel can walk into.

Light in the grain keeps moving, slower now, past the place the split stopped. The shard in her palm cools at the edges.

Read it as written. The scenario.
