Skyfort

A keep above the cloud line

Key art

The pale fortress hung above the cloud line, bridges between the towers

High Fantasy · Standalone · Upcoming

Prologue

Pale towers hang above the cloud line, stone the color of dry bone, joined by bridges too thin for the distance they are asked to cross. A hooded figure starts over a rope bridge between two of them.

One line

Before the synopsis

Wind fills the cloak and lets it go.

Synopsis

Under the ropes there is only cloud, with no ground showing through. The ropes creak in a rhythm that is not the figure's steps. Each board underfoot bends and recovers.

The near tower shrinks behind. The far parapet grows no faster than a slow walk can make it grow.

The figure stops midway because a main rope has begun to glitter along one strand, fibers opening before they fail. The next board holds when a boot tests it. Wind drops, then returns harder.

Extended sequence

After the cut

A rope bridge failing between two towers, nothing under it but cloud

The cloak snaps once and settles. No voice comes from either tower. The cloud below keeps its blank.

The iron ring on the next post knocks softly against its bolt, a small sound, and the figure looks at the ring without reaching yet. A main rope frays and parts with a snap. The bridge drops a hand's width and catches on what remains.

Who remains

A hooded figure at the parapet, cloak in the wind, the fort behind

The figure catches the iron ring and hangs on. Boards knock together. A strip of red cloth tears from the cloak, drops toward the cloud, and snags on the broken rope, fluttering over nothing.

The figure climbs along the remaining rope, gains the far tower, and stands at last on the parapet, the fort massed behind. Breath shows once and is taken by the wind. The broken rope still holds the red strip and worries it.

No road reaches it. Only the sky, and the long fall beneath. The walls keep their secret by being believed differently by everyone who claims them. Fragments

The bridge swings back, smaller, and does not strike again. A board loosened by the blow hangs from one side and does not fall through the cloud. Past the battlements the view is cloud, then a dark spread of roofs that should not be there, then cloud again. The roofs hold for a breath and lose their edges.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Sound of Imagination

Residual

Wind with nothing under it. What is left of a rope, knocking stone. A high thin note off pale masonry. No footsteps on a road, because there is no road. Sound of Imagination

The figure does not point and does not call out. Wind pulls the hood full and then empty. The red cloth on the ring tugs and does not come loose. The fort's stone under the boots is steady.

Showcase

Object from the universe

Broken bridge rope, an iron ring, and a strip of red cloth from the skyfort

A cut of pale wall-stone, moss on the lower edge, the sigil still in it. Taken from a place with no road back. The Showcase

Strand by strand the cloth frees itself, climbs the frayed end, and catches on the iron ring the hands have left. It stays there, a small red mark over the gap, no longer falling.

The flutter follows the break and then shortens. Behind, the broken bridge swings and strikes the pale stone once. The blow rings and dies.

The Craft

Image · motion · sound

Skyfort — the earlier key still

The hanging fort is the still. Motion is cloud through a broken bridge. The residual is the argument about the other side. The Craft

The air beyond the parapet is not. Cloud covers the roofs, uncovers a corner of them, and covers them again.

The red cloth stays caught on the iron ring. The fort remains hung in its place, and the air beyond the parapet will not keep to a single distance.

Read it as written. The scenario.
