Deep inside the World Tree the core is not ordinary timber. A wooden heart hangs among the great roots, and light moves in the grain, slow and steady, with no sap showing yet. The Root Keeper stands at the heart's edge, moss thick on the cloak, both hands kept back from the wood. The tunnel smells of wet root and cold stone. No wind moves the moss. The heart's grain brightens along one line and dims along another, a pulse with no drip. She does not count the pulse. Her boots stay on the root floor, which is dry under the heart.
The light in the grain completes several slow travels before the wood decides anything. A root nearby creaks and settles. Minutes pass as that creak fading and as the heart staying whole. The keeper's hands remain behind her, fingers locked in the moss of her own cloak so they will not reach early. The tunnel beyond her stays dark. She watches the grain, not the dark.
The heart splits along its centre with a low tick. Golden sap stands in the crack and does not drip to the root floor. Through the split a small piece of sky shows, blue and held, not an opening onto weather outside the tree but a piece the wood has grown in order to keep. The tunnel stays lit by the grain alone. The keeper's moss-cloak does not stir. She watches the crack and not the dark behind her. A loose shard comes away into the keeper's hand without a pull, sap still bright in its veins. She does not pry for a second piece.
The sap in the shard dims one shade. The sap in the crack does not. That difference follows the shard leaving the heart. She does not tip the shard to make it drip. The heart sways once on its root and steadies. The scrap of sky in the crack does not dim, and the gold in the open wood holds where the split has stopped. The root that creaked does not creak again. Moss on her cloak stays thick and unmoved.
The sky in the wood keeps its blue. The shard in her hand keeps its dimmer gold. She remains at the edge with the second piece unasked, and the heart hangs steady on the root that holds it.
The root floor stays dry under the crack. Golden sap does not give the stone a stain. The keeper's moss-cloak hangs with its own weight and does not reach for the wood she refused to pull. Blue in the split is a small held piece, not a weather the tunnel can walk into. Light in the grain keeps moving, slower now, past the place the split stopped. The shard in her palm cools at the edges. She does not set it back into the heart to make the sky go out.
