Prologue
Briony Salt stands behind a counter worn smooth where hands used to rest. Dust lies on the wood in a thin even coat, thicker in the groove by the till.

One line
Before the synopsis
The shelves along the side wall do not open when she tries a latch; they stay shut, empty of trade.
Synopsis
Briony Salt
The latch clicks back into its catch. She tries it once more, slower, and the shelves give the same refusal. She presses the till.
The drawer slides out clean and bare. Nothing has been torn from it. Nothing is for sale, and that is why it is empty.
She looks along the bare drawer, the paper lining still pale, the coin cups holding dust and no coin. A minute passes with the drawer open. Dust does not fall into it.
Extended sequence
The street, in order
No bell over the street door rings, because no one has come in. She leaves her hands on the wood and does not wipe them. Out of habit she sets a small price card on the counter, blank side down, as if a number might still belong there. The card sits in the dust and prints a clean rectangle.
The card is unmarked. Both faces are the same blank. She holds it long enough for the dust on her thumb to dull one corner, then puts it back in the drawer and shuts the till.

The shop
A door without a day.
The drawer seats with a soft stop. A monument would be too large for this room, and she builds none. She does not restock. She does not sweep the place into a story of theft.
The shut till ticks as the drawer settles. On the counter the rectangle where the card lay stays a little cleaner than the wood around it. Dust begins, grain by grain, to walk back across that rectangle.
Codex fragment
No one is coming for a loaf or a paper. The day the door opens onto is the day that remains, not the day the shop was for. Air from the street moves the dust on the counter. The older prints, palms and the heels of hands, stay where they are.
The scenario is filed in the Codex.
Sound of Imagination
The pale ghost of the card thins and does not vanish. The latch on the shelves does not lift. The till stays shut, the blank card inside it, face down on nothing. Briony leaves the door open.
Showcase
Object

A pale ghost of the card remains, the size of a price and empty of one. She crosses to the street door and opens it.
The hinges complain once and then run quiet. Day comes in across the threshold and shows the dust in the air, moving, not settling into a new hand. The street outside still has its paving and its opposite windows, and it no longer has the shape of errands.
The Craft
The Craft · Aftermath / Ruin
Image · Motion · Sound · Result
Dust on the counter keeps the print of older hands and does not gain a new one. A wrapper of light lies on the paving and does not become a customer.
The opposite windows stay as they are, glass and no errand behind them. The open door faces a street with nowhere left to send her.
Read it as written. The scenario.
The next room
After this filing
The pale patch on the counter keeps the size of the card, and no number comes to fill it. The next room is Dust Settlement.
