Synopsis
Idris Vane
A woman sits across from him with her hands in her lap while he finishes a duplicate of a document that bears her name in a formal hand. She has already stepped aside from that name in the life she is living. He checks the seal, the date, the spelling, and the copy is as official as the sheet he drew it from.
The seal's impression is clean. He sets the original above the blotter where the strike will not touch it.
She asks him, without a speech, to strike the name. A small gesture at the copy is enough. He draws one straight line through it on the copy only.
Extended sequence
The page, in order
It does not invent a replacement. He does not write a new name underneath, and he does not pretend the strike makes the original unofficial. The certificate above his blotter remains stamped and in force.
She watches the line dry. The ink darkens and stops. A clerk at the back continues another copying job, uninvolved.

The document
The crossed name is still a shape.
That pen does not pause for hers. Idris stamps the copy as a true duplicate, line and all, and slides it to her.
The stamp overlaps nothing but the margin. She leaves it on the desk a moment longer than a person who felt freed would leave it, then takes it with both hands. The paper bends and she lets it flatten.
Codex fragment
Anyone can still read what the line refuses. The folder closes on a document that is still official, and the chair across from Idris empties without a new name to file. Rain keeps the high windows busy.
The scenario is filed in the Codex.
Sound of Imagination
The clerk at the back turns a page. Idris squares the closed folder and does not open it to add a blank where her next name would go. There is no next name on his desk.

Object

The nib comes away clear. The original goes back into its folder, untouched by the strike.
The folder's tab keeps the formal name the copy has crossed. The lined name stays legible beneath the ink.
The Craft
The Craft · Memory / Identity
Image · Motion · Sound · Result
The struck copy leaves with her. The official sheet stays in the folder, sealed by its own stamp, and the empty chair holds the shape of a person who did not receive a replacement to sign.
The high rain does not slack.

The next room
After this filing
No new certificate comes across the blotter to fill the space her hands left, and the line he drew remains a line, not a baptism and not an erasure complete enough to hide the letters under it. The next room is The Other Version.
