Before the synopsis
A wall clock and a tin timer already rest on that same minute.
Synopsis
Soren Beck
He opens the plate, eases the regulator, and shuts it. The second hand hesitates, then returns the minute to the house. He watches a full circuit.
The second hand does not wander. Four seventeen holds in all three faces, and the room around them does not argue with a different hour. He steps through a doorway.
The next room holds almost the same table, almost the same cloth, almost the same light on the wood. Another man of his height and his face sits there without speaking. A work card beside that man's wrist carries a name Soren stopped using years ago.
Extended sequence
The rooms, in order
The ink on that card is dark and settled. The man winds a clock that also shows four seventeen. He does not bar the door. There is no second door inside the first, no glass to step through.
He simply keeps a claim on the rooms that Soren does not make. A pen lies uncapped by the other man's hand. The nib is wet and does not write.

The double
Soren touches his own empty card, the one with no name printed on it. The card is blank on both sides. He does not trade cards. He does not move the other man's clock.
Air between the two tables does the only work of difference: one cloth hangs a finger longer, one chair sits a thumb farther from the wall. He stands in the doorway long enough for the other man to finish the winding and set the clock down. Both clocks still read four seventeen.
Codex fragment
The wet nib disappears. The named card stays where it was. He takes his fingers off the minute hand and sets them back. The hand has not traveled.
The scenario is filed in the Codex.
Sound of Imagination
Two rooms. Almost the same clock.
The wall clock and the tin timer agree with it, down to the second the timer already returned. In the next room the capped pen stays capped. The work card with the old name does not slide toward the doorway, and the blank card does not acquire a letter. One cloth still hangs the longer measure.

Object

The longer cloth stirs and hangs a fraction longer still, a small increase that follows the refusal to trade, and then it stops. He returns to the mantel and sets the hands once more.
They settle on four seventeen before he lets go. The tin timer, touched by nothing, ticks once and returns to the same second. In the next room the other man caps a pen and leaves his clock alone.

One chair still sits the thumb farther from the wall. Soren does not step through again to narrow either difference.
The hired rooms keep both versions of the minute, and neither clock consents to leave it. Soren's fingers rest on the minute hand.
