Prologue

A man keeps a counter of small boxes, each labeled in his own hand with a private loss someone has decided to sell: a summer kitchen, a first day at a bench, the sound of a particular stair. The shop is a room, not a glittering hall.

Before the synopsis

Day comes in through a narrow window and stops at the counter.

Synopsis

Calen Drowe

Nothing here wipes a life clean. What leaves still draws its shape in the person who sold it. He straightens a box that does not need straightening and puts his hands on the wood.

A customer, an older woman, points to a box tied with red thread. She does not read the label aloud. He names the price he has already written.

The number is small and already on the card. She pays, coins exact, and he slides the box across. When her hands take it, his own hands stay curved for a moment around the absence, the shape of the sold hour still in his fingers.

Extended sequence

The counter, in order

The curve does not know the box is gone. The bell over the door is modest. It rings once and the spring settles. He looks at the gap in the row and feels the missing label as a pressure behind his ribs.

The gap is the width of the red-thread box and no other width. Under the counter sits one box with no price, the one that would make him a customer of his own shop. He draws it halfway out, reads his own label, and cannot write a number that would be honest.

The boxes

The pencil touches the card and leaves no digit. He slides the box back. It meets the dark under the counter and the dark takes the label with it.

His hands open on the wood, still almost the shape of what left. He straightens the remaining row so the gap is less obvious and fails. The space keeps the width of the box that left.

Codex fragment

Codex dossier

The narrow window keeps its limited day. The row on the counter is complete except for one missing width, and he does not fill it with a box that still has no honest number. The red thread is gone with the customer. His curved fingers slowly flatten on the wood and still remember the size.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Sound of Imagination

Sound edition

The unpriced label stays unread in the dark. No second customer comes to point. The shop keeps its quiet, its gap, and the box he could not bear to price. He does not retie a new red thread around a different box to hide the gap.

The Showcase

Neighboring boxes will not slide together. He stops pushing them.

The unpriced box stays in the dark under the counter. His hands rest on the wood in the shape of what he sold, and the shop returns to its ordinary quiet. The bell does not ring again.

The Craft

The Craft · Memory / Identity

Image · Motion · Sound · Result

The labels that remain keep their losses and their prices. The pressure behind his ribs eases only enough for him to breathe level, not enough to make the missing width smaller.

Under the counter the unpriced box does not slide out on its own. The modest bell hangs still.
