Letters Never Sent
Key art
Prologue
Nora Quill repairs signatures for people who still intend to send what they wrote. Under a magnifier, she rebuilds a broken stroke in another person's name, matching ink, the new line drying to the same brown as the old.

Before the synopsis
She seals that letter into its envelope and sets it in the outgoing tray.
Synopsis
Nora Quill
The tray already holds two others, corners squared. Rain works on the glass. It does not cue anything of hers to leave.
A blotter takes a drop from the nib and keeps a dark star she does not need. In the drawer at her knee lies a letter addressed to Cassian Pell.
The address is complete. The hand is hers and older than this morning's repairs. She has known it long enough that mailing it would turn the duration into a plot, and she does not.
Extended sequence
The desk, in order
She takes it out only after the repaired signature is safe in the tray. It is already sealed, from an earlier day when she almost became a sender. The seal is unbroken.
She does not open it. She knows the difference between a journey she restores and a journey she withholds, because she spends the day on the first kind. Her thumb rests on Cassian's name and does not smudge it.

Cassian Pell
The name on envelopes that stay.
A clerk passes the tray and takes the other person's letter without asking about the drawer. The clerk's shoes fade down the corridor. Nora's hand remains on Cassian's envelope.
The rain thickens, then steadies. A tick of water on the tin sill finds a rhythm and keeps it. She slides the envelope back under the blotter pad, square to the wood, and returns to the next damaged signature, a stranger's name that will travel before dark.
Codex fragment
Nora's pen keeps moving on a name that is allowed to leave, and the letter to Cassian Pell stays where withholding put it. The stranger's repaired stroke dries to the color of the rest of that name. Nora squares the finished envelope on the blotter and does not put it in the drawer with Cassian's.
The scenario is filed in the Codex.
Sound of Imagination
The drawer stays shut. Rain on the glass steadies into a fine even tick. The magnifier, pushed aside, holds a small bright circle on the wood and nothing written inside the circle.
Showcase
Object

The magnifier shows the break. The stranger's stroke begins to match.
Rain stays on the glass. The outgoing tray empties as the clerk's absence becomes the fact of it: the repaired letters are gone, and Cassian's is not among them. The drawer, shut again, holds the sealed flap in the dark.

The next room
After this filing
Cassian's sealed flap stays in the dark of the drawer, address complete, journey withheld, while Nora's cleared desk keeps only the tools of other people's names. The next room is The Afternoon That Stayed.
