Names the Rain Did Not Keep →

A man stands at the rail with a small empty transparent vial in his hand. Rain strikes his sleeve and does not enter the glass. Drops bead on the rim and fall away outside it.

He turns the vial upright. The inside stays dry.

He does not look for a cap on the wet boards. On a tower below, a large rectangle of light shows the platform as it is: the man, the rain, the empty vial. Smaller rectangles on the lower layers show the same man holding the vial full of light.

Extended sequence

The false light inside those copies is steady, a white that rain does not streak. He turns the real vial over. A drop from his cuff falls past the glass and hits the platform, separate from the vial.

The large rectangle shows the empty glass truly, including the nothing that does not fall. For a moment the honest image and the lying ones disagree in plain sight, and the city does not correct either. He lowers the vial to his side.

Figures in the frame

The large rectangle goes dark in one piece, not a flicker. The tower face where it was is only wet cladding. The smaller rectangles keep the false full vial and the false steadier rain.

In them his coat is drier than the coat on his back. He does not throw the glass. He does not cover it.

Codex fragment

No sediment, no glow, no second drop inside the glass. Above the lying layers, the dark rectangle holds its black shape, and the empty glass does not fill. He stays at the rail with the honest dark above him and the false full vials still shining farther down, none of them changing his hand. Rain finds the open neck of his coat and still refuses the open neck of the vial.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Sound of Imagination

He turns the glass once more, mouth down, and the platform under it stays the only thing that gets wet. The dark rectangle on the tower does not relight. Lower down, the smaller images keep their full vials and their kinder rain, a version of him that does not match the sleeve he can feel. A sign on a nearer layer changes its letters and does not change the lie.

Showcase

His fingers stay around the empty tube. Rain keeps missing the open mouth of it, striking his knuckles instead.

The platform stays empty except for him. Water runs off the rail in a thin rope and breaks on the deck. The vial remains clear.

The Craft

He does not pocket the vial. He does not hold it up to be matched against the false brightness.

Water leaves the rail. The honest dark stays dark.

Read it as written. The scenario.

The next room

After this filing

The empty glass stays empty in his hand while the city below continues to show him a fullness he is not holding. The next room is The Quota.
