Synopsis
Night in a troop-ship. One swinging lamp. Hammocks. Black water under the hull.
A sergeant brought the dead on board. A recruit refuses to sleep to please anyone. The song wants a house. They give it the desert.
The jester stands in the corner. Nine more after the prologue.

After the cut
The Hold is not a cabin. It is the place a song is carried after the ridge has already refused it land. The lamp swings because the hull is honest. The sergeant's kit is not metaphor; it is how the dead boarded without a passenger list. The recruit will not sleep to make the talking quieter. Sleep would be a courtesy the dead did not ask for. The desert is offered as a lease so the song will stop looking for walls. It will not. Water under the boards is the second climate of Fool's Gate: black, close, without a shore.
