Dossier

Not a biography

The Codex files a timber wall as a figure. Fool's Gate. Lamp on wood. Names that do not echo because they were never paid for. The name is not free. This dossier is not the Corner Jester. That plate is already filed. This one is the board, and the clerk who keeps the lamp on it.

What is kept is the cost. A name on this timber is not a caption. It is a debt the room can see. The gold lives only in the scratches. The night around the wall does not offer to pronounce anything. If you came here looking for a jester, the archive will send you to the other plate. This file stays with the unpaid board.

Mystery is left intact on purpose. The Codex will not list every name. It will tell you that listing was the expensive part.

Figures in the file

Oren Pike — clerk of the lamp

He does not write for an audience. He keeps the light on the timber so the cost remains visible. The archive notes that he is not a fool. He is the person who knows what a name costs after the laugh has left.

The unpaid board

Primary figure. Wood, scratches, gold only where the blade went. The film called it The Wall. The Codex calls it a figure because it behaves like one: it receives, it does not return, it does not forget.

The names

Not listed here. That is the point of the file. They were expensive. The plate does not spend them again.

Filed note

Margin

Some walls are not scenery. They are ledgers. Fool's Gate keeps this one because a name that costs nothing is not a name the archive is willing to keep.
