The File of the District

Key art

Memory purged. The bakery remains in the file a moment longer.

The edit

The Stack does not demolish. It selects. A district leaves the way a file leaves a drive: intact in the moment before, and then a name with nothing behind it. The digital still is that selection, held long enough to be looked at.

First the block is a city. Then the seams show, not as cracks in stone but as the edge of a selection. One bakery window stays warmer than the rest. It is the clause the file did not highlight in time. Then the window goes, and the dark is flat. Flat dark is the signature. Ruins have texture. A deletion does not.

Keep

This is not the screening and not the morning after. The screening is Debt Floor. The morning is a print of rain over a rectangle. The file is the cut itself, something you can keep when the office has already agreed there was never a street.

Do not loop it into a comfort. The window goes out once. That is the whole event.

Flat dark

Keep the file as a still, not as a loop someone can leave running in a room. A loop would make the deletion ordinary, a screensaver of a crime. Once is the correct number of times. The warmth in the bakery pane is small. Do not lift it in the grade until it becomes a lantern. It was a shop light. Shop light is enough.

On a screen the still will look cleaner than the steel and colder than the print. That is its place. Steel is weight. Paper is slowness. The file is the method itself, and the method was always clean.
