Prologue

Chemical rain stripes the clinic window in slow verticals that gather, break, and gather again. Outside, the neon over the door barely holds against the rain, letters swimming and then finding themselves.

Synopsis

Chrome Veins · Episodes · Archive

A woman sits in a chair with a fine contact at her temple, a pale disc no larger than a seed. From the contact a clerk draws a filament of pale light, slow, the way a thread is drawn from a spool that does not want to give. He lays it across a gram scale.

The scale dips, steadies, and settles. He reads the number, pinches the filament at the measured place, and winds the weighed portion onto a glass spool.

The glass takes the light and keeps it turning a little after his fingers leave. The rest of the light draws back into the contact and is gone. The woman's eyelid tightens once and eases.

Extended sequence

He writes the grams on a slip, the figures small, and sets the spool in a rack of other spools, each one tagged, each one holding its own pale coil. The new spool's tag is blank until he copies the grams onto it. He does not copy a name.

The other tags show numbers and nothing else. The woman opens her mouth for a word she came in holding. Her hand goes to her coat pocket and stops, unsure of the pocket, fingers reading the seam as if the cloth had changed.

Figures in the frame

She looks at the clerk's rack, not at his face. He does not return the spool. Rain ticks harder on the glass.

The scale's needle trembles with the sound and returns to the number, then, when he clears it, to zero. He leaves his hand off the scale. The contact leaves a small round mark at the temple and nothing else.

Codex fragment

The mark at her temple is gone with her. The chair finishes forgetting the coat. On the glass spool the wound light creeps a narrow turn toward the flange, as if the coil were settling into a tighter rest, and then it stops.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Sound of Imagination

Download audio

The grams on the tag do not change. The clerk watches the creep end and does not rewind it. His scale stays at zero.

Showcase

The chair keeps the shape of her coat for a moment, a warm dent in the vinyl, and then loses it from the shoulders downward. She does not take the slip.

She does not reach for the rack. The door admits a gust that smells of the rain and shuts behind her.

The Craft

Outside, the neon fails against a harder gust and comes back incomplete, one letter short of the word it was. The missing letter leaves a dark gap.

Rain keeps filling that gap and failing to become the letter.

Read it as written. The scenario.

The next room

After this filing

The spool stays in the rack, its coil a little tighter than when he wound it, and the empty chair faces a scale that has nothing left to weigh. The next room is Low Orbit Market.
