Dystopia

The system is correct. That is the horror.

Overview

Dystopia — Aestas Infinity

Climate

Dystopia in Future & Machine: systems that work too well, order paid for with memory and air. Standalone films of control — chapters live under Episodes.

The quota is already met, which is why the corridor can be empty and still be correct. A form denies breath and files the denial as care. The city agrees with itself in one grey. Dawn arrives numbered, on time, for no one in particular. The vessel keeps its heading after the last bunk is cold. None of this raises its voice. A riot would be a kindness. It would mean the system had noticed a person.

What is refused: a speech about freedom, a rebel who wins, a screen that explains the cruelty so you can leave feeling informed. The form is the antagonist. Agreement is the horror.

The principle

Order has won.

Order that has already won. The machines are not cruel. Cruelty would require an opinion. They ration memory and air because the form says a body is a line item, and the form is having an excellent day.

A correct system does not need a witness. It needs the next box ticked. These films stay with the tick. If a hero smashed the console, the climate would become an action picture, and the action picture would let you off.

Quota

The Quota

The Quota is a corridor that has finished being a workplace. The tally on the wall is complete. No one is there to be congratulated. Compliance is not the set dressing. It is the only furniture left, and it does not get tired.

Abandoned Vessel keeps a heading because a heading does not require a crew. Bunks made. Instruments awake. The last order was so well written that the ship can obey it without remembering who gave it. Correct, and empty, which the system files as the same thing.

Abandoned vessel. Crew: none detected.

Permit

Permit to breathe. Status: denied.

Permit to Breathe is a form, not a joke. The status line says denied. The paper does not blush. Somewhere a clerk would have said the air is still there. The clerk is not in the film. The form is, and the form has already won the argument.

Grey District is not a city that lost its colour. Colour was a luxury the policy finished with. Windows match. Coats match. Even the rain looks filed. Spectacle would be a relief, and relief is not on the schedule.

Grey is not missing colour. It is policy.

Numbered Dawn

Numbered dawn. The schedule is active.

Numbered Dawn arrives because the timetable says so. The sky lightens on a count, not on a mercy. People who are still here stand where the number expects them. People who are not here are not a gap in the count. The count does not do gaps.

The Compliant City does not need soldiers. Agreement is cheaper, and it photographs better. Doors open for the hour they were assigned. No one tests a door that was not. The horror is how little force it takes once everyone has decided that force would be impolite.

The compliant city. Agreement is the horror.

How to enter

A blank form, a stamp, a turnstile left on. Nobody in it.

Permit to Breathe if the antagonist is a form. The Compliant City if agreement is the horror. Abandoned Vessel if the system outlived the people who thought they were running it.

The Quota if a finished tally is enough plot. Grey District if policy has a colour and the colour is none. Numbered Dawn if morning is a number that does not miss you.

A story that continues lives under Episodes. These do not.
