One line

Before the synopsis

It hums faintly, a sound more in the teeth than in the ear.

Synopsis

People stand in their coats and do not walk. Their shoes are on the pavement, aligned, as if a step had been considered and declined. A band of real dawn shows under the numeral as a thin warm line, and the towers' light paints over it whenever it thickens.

The pale number covers it. Steam from a grate rises and vanishes inside the painted light. It rolls back to 440.

The change is a blink and then a different digit, not a count a person could follow. The crowd's weight shifts, and still no one steps off the curb. The number jumps to 000.

Extended sequence

For a breath, the towers fail, and a true pale sun sits on the roofs, unnumbered. Faces turn toward it. One man lifts a foot.

The sole clears the pavement. Real light touches the ankle above the shoe. The street, for that breath, is only a street at dawn.

Figures in the frame

442 slams into place over the sun and buries the warm line. The lifted foot returns to the pavement. The coats are held closed again.

Buttons find buttons. No one has been told to move, and no one moves. The adults stay standing, awake, pinned by a number that replaced the sun.

Codex fragment

The thread warms the curb and not the shoes. Steam from the grate cannot thicken it. Faces that turned toward the true sun turn back to the number, or do not turn at all, and the street keeps its still coats under a sun it is no longer allowed to have. 442 does not become 443.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Sound of Imagination

No one tests the failure by waiting for another zero. The thread of dawn remains a thread. Shoes remain on the pavement. The towers keep the number where the sun should be, and the lifted foot does not lift again.

Showcase

The man who lifted his foot sets the sole flat and does not try the curb. 442 holds, and the towers do not let it fail a second time.

The digits do not stutter. The street stays full of people who are awake and not walking. Under the bottom edge of the numeral, a thread of real light remains, too thin to stand in, and nobody steps into it.

The Craft

The grate's steam thins. The man whose foot returned does not look down at the sole to see if dawn marked it.

The thread under the numeral does not thicken into a path. People remain a standing crowd on a street that has a sun and is not allowed to use it.

Read it as written. The scenario.
