Dim lanes mark the gaps.

Synopsis

No one else is aboard. A man walks, and the brightness does not follow his heels. It keeps the old route beside him, a pattern of steps he is not repeating.

Where his sole lands, the metal stays dim. A pace to his left a lane brightens in a rhythm that is not his: step, step, pause, step. He shortens his stride to meet the pause.

The lane does not accept it. It stays a half step ahead. The remembered steps stop a moment later, on their own mark.

Extended sequence

A grate ticks as it cools. He goes on to a junction. The old lane hesitates, brightens, dims, then leaves his corridor and streams toward a hatch at the far end. The other mouths of the junction stay dark.

The lane ahead of him makes none. The hatch stands open on a bay with cradles and no ship. The lights pool at the lip and stop there, crowded, the missing traffic arrived and with nothing to board.

Figures in the frame

One lane tries the edge, piles into a soft bar, and does not cross. The light does not climb onto his boots. It breaks around the toes and closes behind the heels. Cradles curve away into the unlit bay.

A painted arrow on the deck points into the bay and has been walked pale, the head almost the color of the metal, the shaft still a little darker. He does not step over. Behind him the corridor he came from goes dark, lane by lane, junction first, then the stretch before it, then the grate.

Codex fragment

He draws the boot back. The light returns to the same line and no farther. Time passes as small metal sounds: a clamp cooling, a cable tapping once against a cradle, air moving through an empty berth and finding no hull to divide. The pool, which had only crowded, sorts itself.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Sound of Imagination

The lanes form a narrow queue along the lip, each brightness waiting a turn, and still none crosses. The rearmost lane thins, gives what it has to the lanes in front, and goes out. Under that loss the arrow looks paler. The remaining light presses the lip and stops.

Showcase

He turns only when the last lane is gone. No path of light leads back.

Only the pool at the hatch remains, restless against the lip. He sets one boot nearer the edge. The light retreats the width of a seam and holds.

The Craft

He keeps his weight on the near side. No cradle lamp answers.

Nothing in the bay lights a return path. The remembered lanes glow up to his boots and no farther.

Read it as written. The scenario.

The next room

After this filing

The hatch stays open on the empty cradles, and the shortened queue holds its line against a berth that will not take it. The next room is Permit to Breathe.
