Who I Was Before

Prologue
Oriel spreads documents under a window. She has changed rooms, changed the work, changed even the way she signs a page.

One line
Before the synopsis
Today's form asks for a signature, and she gives it the new way, a shorter stroke, the last letter withheld.
Synopsis
Oriel Finch
The ink dries as the person this day is willing to recognize. Beside the form, one print lies face up and will not update. It is her own face from another year, emulsion that outlives the sitting.
The mouth in the paper still answers to a name the day no longer uses. The collar in the print is a collar she does not have on.
She tries a practical correction. She slides the print under a folder, signs a second form with the new hand, and speaks her present name to the empty table. The name is said once.
Extended sequence
The print, in order
The table does not answer. When she clears the folder, the photographed face is unchanged: same collar, same unrevised eyes. Memory sits there as a document that outranks the day.
She does not tear it and does not file it with the forms that will travel. She sets a paperweight on its corner so a draft cannot pretend to carry it off. The weight prints a faint dent in the emulsion at that corner, and the face remains exact, a small mark that follows the holding-down and does not revise the year in the paper.

The photograph
A document. Not nostalgia first.
The new signatures dry in a stack. The withheld last letter dries shorter than the rest of the stroke and stays withheld. Oriel rests her newer hand beside the older face and does not ask the paper to follow her.
Window light crosses both the fresh ink and the old emulsion and does not reconcile them. The folder that hid the print for a moment stays open and empty of any power to update it. The print stays exact under the weight.
Codex fragment
The window light shifts a little and still finds both versions of her on the table: the shorter signature, drying, and the older face, exact. Oriel does not lift the paperweight to give the draft another chance. The faint dent stays in the corner of the emulsion.
The scenario is filed in the Codex.
Sound of Imagination
The collar in the print stays the old collar. The eyes stay unrevised. Forms that will travel stay in their stack, last letters withheld, ready to leave the room without the print.
Showcase
Object

The forms with the shorter name wait to be sent, and the face that will not update keeps its own authority on the table. The dent at the corner stays a dent.
The present name, already spoken, does not stick to the emulsion. The newer hand stays beside the older face and does not cover it.
The Craft
The Craft · Memory / Identity
Image · Motion · Sound · Result
The print will not leave with them. She does not speak the present name a second time.
The empty table has already heard it once and has already failed to correct the paper.
Read it as written. The scenario.
The next room
After this filing
Her newer hand remains beside the older face, close enough to compare, not close enough to cover, and the day does not win. The next room is The Borrowed Face.
After the frame
Mark · keep · letter
Released rooms keep a mark from one to five, a keep on this device, and letters that stay with the page after the feed has moved on. Who I Was Before is ready.
