Prologue

Overcast daylight fills a municipal room where the lamps are already on, ordinary and untragic. Harlan Voss, municipal coat buttoned, stands at a table model of the city.

Synopsis

Harlan Voss

Tiny lamps along them are lit though the room does not need them to explain the day. He reads them the way other people read ledgers, a finger moving block by block, density numbers penciled in a narrow book. The city he planned for no longer arrives in the numbers.

A block that should be full is a smaller figure. He does not cross the figure out to make it kinder.

The timetable beside the model still runs. A small hand on that timetable advances with the minute and does not care that the numbers have thinned. He takes the book to the window.

Extended sequence

The districts, in order

Below, a bus stop holds its posted times. A bus draws in on the minute, doors open, and no one boards. The doors stay open for the usual count.

The interior of the bus is lit and empty. A shop grille that was half raised at morning is down now. The metal meets the pavement in a straight line.

Harlan Voss — The Soft End of Cities

Farther along, an elevator in a glass lobby opens on an empty car, waits, and closes. It opens a second time on the same empty car, a repeat that follows the first and still finds no one, then closes again. Sodium lamps burn though the day is only grey, not night.

The end is soft: function without the bodies that used to justify it. Harlan writes the bus as on time and the load as none. The pencil note is small and exact.

Codex fragment

Codex dossier

His finger passes a block whose density he has already reduced and he does not darken the tiny lamp that stands there. Harlan buttons nothing that is not already buttoned. He leaves the narrow book open beside the model. The timetable's small hand advances another minute and the city outside does not thicken to meet it.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Sound of Imagination

Sound edition

Sodium lamps keep burning in the grey. No one arrives at the stop to make the posted time into a boarding. The glass lobby stays empty around the closed elevator.

City model — Quiet Apocalypse

Object · Figurines · The Showcase

He does not add a siren or a ruin to make the thinning louder. He watches the stop for the next posted minute.

No second bus is required to prove the note. The posted time remains posted. He returns to the model and leaves every tiny street lit.

The Craft

Image · Motion · Sound · Result

The shop grille stays a straight line against the pavement. Tiny paint on the model does not flake.

He does not darken a street to match the thinning, and he does not add a sound that would make the quiet into an emergency. The stop below keeps the next time posted.
