Joss Amberly, high-vis vest open over a hoodie, caps a brush and kills the lamp.
Synopsis
Joss Amberly
The model disappears into the depot's ordinary dim. He is not building a chase. He is finished with a line that no speed will use.
He leaves the capped brush in a jar and does not take the model with him. Pale dawn lies on wet asphalt.
Painted arrows gleam and point at nothing that is moving. Joss walks the hard shoulder, because the rules that kept walkers off the lanes have become optional, and because the lanes themselves are empty. His boots stay out of the travel lines he once painted for speeds that no longer occur.
Extended sequence
The lanes, in order
Water ticks from a sign gantry. Each drop hits and spreads and is just a drop. No engine answers it.
The interchange holds its geometry, a monument to motion that has withdrawn, every curve still correct. He stops on the shoulder above the looping ramps. A sign face drips at one corner.

Wind moves a scrap of damp paper along a lane and lets it stick. The paper peels halfway, slides, and sticks again lower, a small failed leaving. He does not chase it.
He looks along the arrows. The wet paint of an older line mirrors the sky, a dull ribbon of dawn, and then the mirror dulls as the light rises without a single vehicle to use it. His hands stay in the vest pockets.
Codex fragment
He does not invent a last station to give the road a use. The scrap of paper, stuck low in the lane, flutters at one corner and stays stuck. His pockets keep his hands.
The scenario is filed in the Codex.
Sound of Imagination
The interchange does not answer him with a single engine or a single brake light. Time passes as the gantry gives another drop, and another, onto an arrow's tip. A flake of paint, loosened by the water, lets go of the arrow and lands in the wet, still the color of the mark, no longer pointing.
Showcase
Object, not likeness

Object · Figurines · The Showcase
Joss shifts his weight and the gravel of the shoulder answers once. The model he left in the depot is not here, and the real ramps do not shrink to meet it.
A distant signal gantry shows a dark face, unlit, no instruction for a driver who is not coming. Dawn climbs the wet and makes every arrow a small mirror that points at cloud.

Image · Motion · Sound · Result
The arrow remains readable without it. Joss does not step into the lane to press the flake back.
Painted arrows shine on the empty lanes, his boots remain on the hard shoulder, and the fallen flake stays where the drip put it down.
Read it as written. The scenario.

Empty Motorway is filed in Quiet Apocalypse. Infrastructure without traffic is only geometry. The house keeps the climate. The climate keeps this title — not a genre tag taped on after the fact.
The next room
After this filing
The arrow keeps its bare tip and the gantry keeps dripping on it. The next room is Calendar of the Last Week.
