Prologue

Fluorescent light falls on a metal desk and a wall calendar, even and without mood. Willa Croft, cardigan buttoned, glasses on a cord, keeps other people's appointments in pencil.

One line

Before the synopsis

Monday's square is crossed: those tasks were kept, the pencil line firm.

Synopsis

Willa Croft

Tuesday holds two small notes, both finished, both dull. Wednesday carries a note of rain and a name half rubbed, a meeting that happened only partly, the letters surviving as grooves. Thursday is a list of small returns, each one ticked.

She does not treat the week as a countdown. No clock on the wall performs urgency.

The week does not know it is last. A radiator ticks and settles. The pencil in her hand is short and still sharp.

Extended sequence

The week, in order

The square has an hour written and no name left to attach to it. The space beside it is blank, not erased, never filled. She lifts the desk phone to cancel and finds the card that held the number already blank.

The card is the right card, the one filed under that hour. The ink is simply gone, a pale rectangle where a number used to press. There is no meeting to undo because there is no one left on the paper to tell.

She sets the phone in its cradle. The bell inside it gives a small tired sound and stops.

Her pencil hovers over Friday, ready to write an ending across the square, the lead almost touching the paper. She leaves Friday empty, the way an abandoned hour is abandoned, without a ceremony of lastness. The empty desk behind her stays empty.

Codex fragment

Codex dossier

Time passes as the fluorescent hum holds one note. The half-rubbed name on Wednesday loses another stroke while she is not writing. A letter that was almost there becomes a shadow, then only the dent of a pencil that someone else stopped using.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Sound edition

She turns the calendar page up at one corner, not to the next month, only enough to see that the paper beneath is the same paper, unwritten, and lets the corner fall. The week stays the week she is in. The radiator gives a second tick, smaller than the first, and does not argue with the blank she is keeping.

A chair there is pushed in, its seat clear. She lets the glasses rest against the cardigan.

The cord swings once and is still. She sets the pencil on the rail of the calendar, lead pointing at Friday and not touching it.

The blank card under the phone slides a fraction deeper into its sleeve, as if the holder wanted the absence seated properly, and then it stops, more hidden than before. She does not pull it back.

Friday's square stays bare.

The next room

After this filing

The pencil lies beside it, lead unblunted by a finale, and the hour written there keeps no name attached to the empty square. The next room is Quiet After People.
