One line

Before the synopsis

Thane Orwick holds a ring of keys for rooms that no longer announce themselves.

Synopsis

Thane Orwick

The keys are different sizes and none of them is labeled. Doors along the corridor swing on their closers and settle. The sound is a soft sequence and then the corridor is a corridor.

A plant on the sill leans toward the glass, because light does not need an audience. One leaf touches the pane. He is a caretaker crossing the tile, not a king of anything.

He does not rename the building, and he does not sit the desk as a throne. The desk chair stays pushed in. A pen lies parallel to the blotter and he does not pick it up on the way to the bells.

Extended sequence

The lobby, in order

At the bells he takes a blank slip and a pen. Habit wants a name in the slot so a key can belong to a person. He writes the first letter, looks at the key in his other hand, and stops. The letter is only a stroke.

It does not commit to a name. He rubs it off with a thumb. The slip goes back into the drawer blank.

Graphite stays in the whorl of his thumb and he does not press it into a new slip. He hangs the key on the latch of the nearest door and lets the latch hold it. The key turns a little with its own weight and stops. The door swings a little and returns.

The closer finishes its work. Beyond the glass the plant completes its lean. The desk behind him stays unmanned.

Codex fragment

Codex dossier

The other keys remain on the ring in his hand, unlabeled, and he does not hang a second one to make a system. The door with the single key eases and settles once more. The blank drawer stays blank. Light keeps the plant against the glass, and the caretaker remains on the tile with no throne and no name in the bells.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Sound of Imagination

Sound edition

A closer ticks in the corridor and is done. The pen on the desk stays parallel to the blotter. The rubbed slip does not work its way back to a letter. Thane's thumb keeps its smudge.

Image · Motion · Sound · Result

The lobby keeps its lamps, its empty slots, and one key that belongs to a latch instead of a person. He does not sit the desk to watch the door.

The door does not need a watcher. The plant's leaf stays flat on the glass.

The next room

After this filing

The ring of the rest stays in his hand, a small cold weight, and the lobby's lamps burn on without a name to justify them. The next room is The Last Kindness.
