The Soft Apocalypse of Sleep
Key art
Prologue
The end of the day arrives as a shared decision to rest. People in the square lie down where they are: on steps, on the dry basin of a fountain, beside carts they do not lock.

Before the synopsis
A woman folds her coat under her head and sets her shoes neatly beside the fold.
Synopsis
A vendor lowers the awning of a stall and stretches out behind it. The awning's edge taps once in a small breeze and then is quiet. Windows above go dark in a calm order, not from fear.
One window, then the next, then a whole floor. The sky stays the color of a lamp just extinguished.
The fountain basin holds no water. Sleepers do not pull their coats tighter against a panic that is not there. In the night that follows, small things leave.
Extended sequence
The vendor's scale is on the counter when he closes his eyes and is not there when a breeze moves the awning. The place where the scale rested is a cleaner rectangle in the dust of the counter. The woman's shoes, set neatly beside her, are gone by the time her hand twitches in sleep.
The folded coat remains. A name painted on a cart fades letter by letter. The letters go pale, then empty, and the cart's boards keep the shape of a word without the word.
Figures in the frame
No one wakes to stop it. The square does not burn and does not shout. A coin that sat by the scale's place is also gone when the breeze returns, a second small leaving that follows the first and does not wake the vendor.
The cleaner rectangle grows by the width of that coin and then stops growing. A thin call of morning moves across the stones, a voice from a high window saying the word as if naming it could restore the day. The word is ordinary.
Codex fragment
They look at each other and do not trade a story that would make the losses large. Other sleepers remain down. A cart with a faded name stays where it was left. The high window does not call again.
The scenario is filed in the Codex.
Sound of Imagination
The woman does not search the square for the shoes. The vendor does not lift the awning to look under it for the scale. Other sleepers stay down on the steps and in the dry basin. The faded cart keeps the boards where a name used to be.
Showcase
It does not bring the scale back and does not bring the shoes. The woman sits up and finds her coat still folded, her shoes absent.
She puts a hand on the empty place beside the coat and leaves the hand there. The vendor stands and touches the empty place where the scale rested. The cleaner rectangle is cooler than the rest of the counter.
The Craft
The high window stays open and silent. Cold outlines on the stones mark where small things were set and then were not.
The color of the sky remains the color of a lamp just extinguished, even with the morning already named once. They remain among the shapes of what was set down.
Read it as written. The scenario.
