An oxidized copper box sits on dirty linen on a kitchen table. A cold cup, a spoon, a metal casing, and a knife lie around it, none of them in use.

One line

Before the synopsis

Smoke leaves the lock in a thin, even thread, too regular for a draft.

Synopsis

The thread rises a short distance and breaks into nothing the room keeps. The box is small enough to carry. Its corners have worn the linen pale in a rectangle that is not yet a stain.

When a hand tests the handle, the copper weighs more than its size. The hand lifts it a finger off the linen and sets it back. The thread of smoke does not change its timing for the lift.

Beside the box, a small flask green with rust rests on the same linen. A saint is pressed into the flask's metal. The linen is already dark, already keeping the shape of whatever was set down before.

Extended sequence

After the cut

The same box on a kitchen table, among a cold cup, a spoon, a casing, and a knife.

The saint's face is worn at the nose and still a face. The hand does not take the flask. The smoke thins, then leaves the lock again, once, like a breath. The cup does not steam.

The knife does not move. The spoon keeps its dull bowl toward the box and does not turn. The hand waits through a second breath and a third.

Figures in the frame

At the edge

A small flask, green with rust, a saint pressed into the metal, on empty linen.

Nothing else on the table learns the rhythm. The hand takes the box off the table. The linen underneath keeps a dark mark in the box's exact rectangle. The mark is darker than the cloth around it from the first moment the copper leaves.

The saint's face, pressed in metal, does not change. A thin thread, the same even smoke, leaves the flask's rim once and stops, a second breath that follows the box and does not become the box. The knife turns a fraction on the linen, as if the weight leaving had given it a small permission, and then it stays.

Codex fragment

What the still would not say

The cold cup stays cold. The casing stays a casing. The hand leaves the chair. The box stays where it was set.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Sound of Imagination

Before the score

No further thread leaves the lock, and no further thread leaves the flask. The saint remains pressed in green rust, nose worn, face unchanged. The knife keeps the fraction of a turn it took and does not take another. The spoon does not follow it.

Showcase

Object from the room

The copper box taken off the table. A dark mark on the linen that came with it.

The box is set on a chair. Smoke leaves the lock one more time and stops.

The chair's wood takes the weight without a creak the room bothers to repeat. The mark on the linen remains darker than the cloth around it. No cloth is drawn over it.

The Craft

Image · motion · sound

The Relic That Breathes — the earlier key still

The cold cup does not acquire steam to imitate the smoke that has stopped. The dark rectangle in the linen holds its edges.

Nobody draws a cloth across it, and the chair does not return the copper to the shape it left. The table holds the cup, the spoon, the casing, the knife, and the flask.

Read it as written. The scenario.

The next room

After this filing

The dark rectangle stays in the linen where the copper was, and no one wipes it. The next room is The Bell Without a Tower.
