The Moment Between
Key art
Prologue
Clemency Rigg times the moment between two rooms, and the timing is not a pause before a plot. One shoe is on the near boards, one on the far, and she does not complete the crossing.

Before the synopsis
The sill is a strip of worn wood between two floors that do not match in color.
Synopsis
Clemency Rigg
A handled latch rests against her palm, half turned, the door neither shut nor free. In her other hand a small timer runs, its hand moving only for this gap. The timer's tick is quicker than the house and quieter than either room.
The near room has a ticking kettle just off the boil. Steam worries the spout and does not yet break. The far room has a curtain lifting in a draft she has not stepped fully into.
The curtain rises, holds a curve, and drops a little without settling. A chair in the near room keeps a coat over its back. A bowl in the far room keeps a spoon.

What is refused

She does not choose either continuation. Her weight stays divided. The latch warms under her palm and is not released into either room.
When the timer reaches the mark she set, a soft bell the size of a coin strikes once. The strike is clean and small. That would be the cue, in another life, to move.

Clemency Rigg
The bell's tongue settles back against the metal and does not strike again. She lets the timer run past its mark, the extra seconds still part of the between. The hand of the timer does not stick at the mark to argue with her.
Her weight stays divided. The kettle clicks as the boil breaks and steadies. The steam thins into a thread and then into nothing the air bothers to show.
Codex fragment
Fragment
The far shoe does not advance. The coat stays on the chair. The spoon stays in the bowl. The timer's hand keeps its small circuit past the mark, and the latch stays half turned in a palm that does not finish the turn.
The scenario is filed in the Codex.
Sound of Imagination
Live tape
The kettle's tick continues under the boil it has already finished, a smaller sound than before. The timer does not return to its mark to offer the cue again. Clemency's palm stays on the half-turned latch until the metal and the skin are the same warmth, and still the door is neither shut nor free. The two floors meet under her shoes and do not become one floor.

A second, smaller lift follows the settling, the draft spending what it has left, and the cloth goes flat. That second lift is the change that comes after the first refusal: the far room offers its air again, and she still does not take it.
The handle warms and is not released into either room. She watches the timer, not a future, and the moment holds her where the two floors meet. The near shoe does not slide.
