Prologue

Dawn is in the high windows because the night shift has ended, not because the hour is being asked to mean more than that. A trolley of unlabelled cassettes waits to be cleared.

One line

Before the synopsis

Ivo Harker switches on a table lamp and pulls the trolley in.

Synopsis

Ivo Harker

Manila sleeves and blank cards sit in a tray. Oxide smell comes up when he opens a case that arrived with no sender. The other cases stay shut.

Their labels are missing, not torn. The windows give a grey light that does not yet beat the lamp. He sets the case on the blotter.

The cassette inside is ordinary, screws tight, tape seated. He does not shake it. He does not hold it to the window.

Extended sequence

What is refused

extended sequence

Minutes pass as the deck warming when he powers it, a small hum, and as the trolley ticking while a wheel settles. The blank cards stay blank. No one else comes in to claim the hour.

The dawn does not hurry the work. He threads the cassette into a deck and lets it run. What comes is hiss, room-tone without a voice, without a plea, without a story of harm or a visitor from anywhere.

He does not lean in and translate it. He notes the dawn hour, the lack of a sender, and the fact of the hiss. His pencil stops before a title.

The card in his hand stays blank. The hiss continues, even, neither rising into a word nor falling into silence. He lets it run past the length of a message and it is still only hiss.

Codex fragment

Fragment

Codex dossier

The blank card's corner lifts in the lamp's heat and settles flat again, still without a title. He slides the cassette into a manila sleeve with the blank card and sets both under the lamp. The trolley behind him is one case lighter. The deck's hum stops when he powers it down.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Sound of Imagination

Live tape

Sound edition

The hiss is gone from the room and remains, by the fact of the sleeve, the thing he kept. Dawn in the high windows brightens one degree and does not write a word on the card. The blank card lies in the lamp's circle, and the cassette beside it carries only its soft hiss. The discard shelf does not gain this sleeve.

Object

On the discard shelf, sleeves already wait for tapes no one will keep. He holds this cassette over that shelf, then brings it back.

The hiss is what survived. While it is in his hand above the shelf, the hiss thins, as if the discard had a gravity, and then returns to its full soft noise when he draws the cassette back to the lamp. That return follows the choice not to discard.

The lifted corner stays flat, untitled, in the warmth. The manila sleeve warms under the lamp until the oxide smell is stronger and then no stronger.

Ivo does not retitle the card. He squares the sleeve with the edge of the blotter and takes his hands away.

The next room

After this filing

The trolley holds the rest of the unlabelled cases, still waiting, none of them opened to compete with the hiss he chose to keep. The next room is Folder Without Owner.
