The Field That Counts
Key art
Prologue
Storm light sits low over a field divided into strict rows, the ground marked as if it keeps a count. A woman walks the furrows and counts them aloud, one row to the next.

Synopsis
Folk Horror · Standalone · Upcoming
She stops and looks back. Boot prints crowd the mud behind her, more prints than steps she has taken. At the far edge a line of adults stands without any name called out to them and without a hand raised.
Rain ticks on her shoulders and on the mud. The rows run straight.
She speaks the next count and the furrow does not become that count. The extra prints behind her hold their shape in the wet and do not soften as fast as hers. Minutes pass as the storm light staying low, and as the far line not waving and not leaving.
Extended sequence
After the cut
She does not cross the open ground. She sets her feet in the row she occupies and takes a steel tray from under her arm. She sets the steel tray down in the row she occupies: field soil, heads of wheat, the rim stamped from one through twelve.
She places the twelfth head in its slot. The twelfth row of the field darkens under the rain, separate from the rest. The far line has one more person standing in it.
Figures in the frame
Kept at the edge
A fresh trail of prints runs along a furrow outside her path. Rain on the tray ticks a steady tally. A drop settles in the stamped twelve and stays, round and bright, not a number she adds by hand.
One wheat head shifts a slot when the rain pushes it. She does not put it back. The shift follows the twelfth placing and the field does not correct it.
Codex fragment
The tray keeps the drop in the stamped twelve. The shifted head stays in the wrong slot. She remains in her row, and the unnamed line at the edge does not thin back to the number she was willing to speak.
The scenario is filed in the Codex.
Sound of Imagination
Storm light does not lift. Mud takes the rain and holds the extra prints deeper than her own. The steel tray rings softly under the drops and the ring is not a number she can join.
Showcase
Object from the universe
She does not cross the open ground toward them. Rain ticks a steady tally on the steel.
The extra prints hold their shape in the unused row, and the line of people stays unnamed at the edge of the storm. The darkened twelfth row stays darker than its neighbors. The new person in the line does not step forward to be counted by her mouth.
The Craft
Image · motion · sound
The earlier still, then the minute after the cut, then the object. The Craft
Wheat heads in their slots glisten. The one that shifted stays shifted.
At the far edge the added person stands in the same stillness as the others, no name, no hand. She keeps her place in the row she occupied when the twelfth went dark.
Read it as written. The scenario.
