Darkness & Psyche

Folk Horror

The land remembers the bargain.

Overview

Climate

Folk horror climate — a boundary stone, a counted field, a scarecrow year, a village with no map, an unnamed path, an unseen harvest

Folk horror here is a bargain the land already accepted. Not a costume village, and not a ghost story that happens to have trees. Inside Darkness & Psyche there are six standalone films. None of them continues the one before it.

A stone where the village ends. A field that counts who crosses. A year measured by a scarecrow. A village that will not be drawn. A path the village will not name. A harvest nobody can see.

Occult Ritual is a circle spoken indoors. This climate is earth, the field, and the edge of the map.

The principle

The edge of a worked field at dusk. The wood is the other party.

The guest brings a reason. The field does not use it. Work — the walk, the count, the standing — is the rite, and it was signed before anyone in the film was born. Leave clean and you have only proved you were never the party who mattered.

The edge

A standing stone and a clock that has stopped agreeing with the night.

The Boundary Stone does not become safer by being looked at in daylight. Night lasts longer than the clock is willing to admit, and the stone does not apologise to the clock. The agreement with the land is not intact.

The Bone Path is a path the village will not name. Someone left a trace, then left the meaning. A map is what a frightened person buys. The path has already declined to be a product.

A path with no name. A trace, then nothing. No sign and no carved stone.

The field

A field of posts. Someone has been counting who crosses.

The Field That Counts is not haunted. Haunting would be personal. This is arithmetic: who crossed, who did not, who will not be counted on the way back. Normal was the first thing to go.

Scarecrow Year measures the year by a figure that does not need a face. No chorus arrives to tell you the moral. The moral was the standing still, and it is not interested in your applause.

One scarecrow in a worked field. Standing still is the action. Dusk.

Off the map

A village in the mist, with no road that would survive a map.

Village Without Maps will not sit for a drawing. Lanes close the distance without anyone walking. Language thins before the story does, which is the village being polite.

Harvest of the Unseen leaves the world looking intact on purpose. An intact world is harder to flee. The agreement holds the last light. It does not hold your hand.

One sheaf standing in a cut field. No one is holding it.

How to enter

A standing stone. Nothing is carved on it.

Six folk horror films. One climate. Start with the stone if you want the edge of the village. A story that continues lives under Episodes. These do not.

The Field That Counts if you can stand being numbered. Scarecrow Year if the year is the figure in the field. Village Without Maps if the drawing fails. Harvest of the Unseen if the crop is the thing you cannot see. The Bone Path if the trace is enough and the meaning is not on offer.
