Prologue

Signal from nowhere

Amber light comes from one lamp and from the dial of a heavy receiver on a scarred desk. A woman leaves the earphones on the table, because the sound is already in the room: a spaced ticking that matches none of the clocks on the wall.

One line

Before the synopsis

The clocks disagree with each other and with the ticking.

Synopsis

Cosmic Horror · Standalone

One second hand stalls and jumps. Another moves smoothly through a time the tick does not share. She sits with her hands off the dials.

The ticking keeps its space, four quiet beats and a longer gap, then four again. The receiver's needle rests off any marked station. Minutes pass as that pattern and as dust on the desk not settling any thicker.

She does not put the earphones on to make the sound private. The room already has it. A loose screw on the receiver's case ticks out of time with the room and then gives up.

Extended sequence

After the cut

She switches the receiver off. The needle falls to its stop. The ticking softens and rises from the floor beneath the set.

She puts her palm flat on the boards. The amber pulse beats in the wood, older than the wiring she can see. The pulse matches the gap in the ticking.

Who remains

She lifts a loose board. There is no cable under it. There is a shallow dark, the same amber, and the ticking made clearer.

A faint warmth comes up from the dark, enough to color her palm, not enough to mark the wood. She lays a blank sheet on the desk and marks the intervals with a pencil. The dots fall into a row she does not choose, and the row continues off the paper onto the wood itself.

Codex fragment

Filed with the room

The stalled second hand jumps toward the tick, misses, and stalls again. The dot on the wood does not thin away. Under the lifted board the shallow dark pulses, brighter on the beat, dimmer in the gap. The dead dial on the receiver answers that brightness with a glow of its own, in step, though the plug lies on the floor.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Sound of Imagination

Residual

The tone is already a score. Residual belongs to Sound of Imagination.

She sets the loose board back down, not quite into its old seat. Amber shows through the seam as a thin line and pulses with the tick. The earphones on the table give no sound of their own. Their cord lies in a coil that does not twitch.

Showcase

Object from the universe

A still of the amber room. Not a radio you can buy. The Showcase

The next dot still arrives on the wood, just past the paper's edge, as if the row had one more interval that did not need her. She pulls the plug from the wall.

The lamp stays amber. The floor keeps the time. The clocks on the wall try to follow and fail.

The Craft

Image · motion · sound

Stills of the instruments. Then the tone. Then the throat. The Craft

Dust on the desk jumps a grain's width on each beat and settles in the gap. She does not brush it clear.

The sheet is dotted to its edge. Under the boards the light pulses, and the dead dial glows in step with it.

Read it as written. The scenario.
