Perrin Hawke sits at a teal screen in a booth the city no longer pays as if a listener existed. Headphones lie on the desk, off her ears.

Synopsis
Perrin Hawke
Meters on the board breathe in a narrow band. The frequency still leaves the mast. The room that used to answer does not.
A pencil lies in the groove of the board. The paper log is open to a page of earlier hours, each line a time and a short note. The teal screen shows a thin line, almost flat, with a small regular lift that is the carrier and not a voice.
She does not put the headphones on. Minutes pass as the meters rising a hair and falling, and as the empty chairs keeping their rows. The mast indicator holds a steady point of light.
Extended sequence
The booth, in order
Dust on the headphones does not stir. She checks the carrier with a finger on the dial and leaves a tone in the air, not a speech. It does not become words. A phone lamp at the edge of the board lights, the old signal that someone had called in.
Her hand stays off the headphones. The lamp dies without a voice. She does not fill the quiet with a confession about the work, and she does not beg the empty chairs to save the hour.
Figures in the frame
Perrin Hawke

Her eyes stay on the meters. The meters dip once when the lamp dies, then climb back into the same narrow band. The thin line on the teal screen flattens for a heartbeat and returns to its small lift. No second lamp lights.
The tone continues, and it is still not a speech. She lets the dial alone after that. The carrier does not need her finger to keep leaving the mast.
Codex fragment
She writes the time on the paper log: carrier up, return path dead. The pencil darkens the line and stops. She does not add a name. The mast indicator remains steady.
The scenario is filed in the Codex.
Sound of Imagination
The teal screen keeps its thin line of sound. Outside, the city does not fund the illusion that the tone is company. The glass between her and the chairs shows her own dim shape and, beyond it, nothing seated. A chair beyond the glass ticks as the building cools, the sound of a joint, not of a person sitting.

She turns the log back one sheet. An earlier hand has written the same kind of line: carrier up, no return.
She does not copy a remedy from it. She lets the page fall open on the new hour. The tone in the air does not grow a voice to reward the repetition.

Perrin sets the pencil down. The headphones stay where they were at the start of the hour.
The log line dries darker than the older notes above it. The carrier continues from the mast, and the headphones lie beside the teal screen.

Signal After the Audience is filed in Quiet Apocalypse. Infrastructure without traffic is only geometry. The house keeps the climate. The climate keeps this title — not a genre tag taped on after the fact.
The next room
After this filing
The phone lamp stays dark, and the meters keep breathing inside their narrow band. The next room is The Soft End of Cities.
