INT. LIBRARY — NIGHT

A man sits at a desk the dark has nearly swallowed. One oil lamp holds a small gold room around the blotter, his hands, and the bundles of tied papers at his elbow. Beyond that gold the shelves are only guesses. The rest of the library has already gone. The lamp's glass is warm. The oil smells faintly and does not smoke into the dark.

The flame thins. His hand rests beside the glass and does not touch it. Inside the globe a tiny figure stands in the fire, burning and whole, no taller than a thumb. It does not consume itself. From the dark above the desk a pale face leans down and stops at the edge of the lamplight. The face does not cross into the gold. It waits where the black begins.

He turns the wick. The flame fattens, then thins harder. The gold swells and shrinks with it. The figure inside the globe lifts its head. The pale face leans lower, still not entering the gold. He ties one more bundle and sets it with the others, the string pulled tight. The knot is small and finished. He reaches for another bundle and finds the stack already tied, every string finished, though his fingers have only just left the last knot. One string he tightened loosens a finger's width on its own and then holds, a small undoing that follows the discovery and does not untie the stack.

The gold shrinks until only the lamp, the papers, and his hand remain in it. The tiny figure turns its head once more while the flame thins, still burning, still whole. The pale face stays in the black just over the wick. Shelves beyond the gold do not return. The loosened string stays loosened by that finger's width and no more. His other hand stays on the blotter inside the last of the gold.

The small figure keeps burning in the glass. The pale face does not come any closer to the wick. The tied bundles stay tied. The wick does not recover the room it has already given up, and the desk keeps only what the gold still consents to hold.

He does not feed the wick again. The small gold does not volunteer a larger room. Bundles at his elbow stay finished, strings knotted, one of them loosened only by the finger's width it already took. The tiny figure in the globe remains whole inside the fire and does not step out of the glass. The pale face above the desk remains at the boundary and does not come down into the gold to read the papers. Shelves stay guesses. The blotter stays inside the last light, and the rest of the desk has already joined the dark. Oil does not smoke. His hand on the blotter does not reach for the glass. The library that has gone stays gone. What the lamp still holds is the lamp, the papers, and the hand, and the black over the wick keeps the face that will not enter.
