INT. OFFICE — NIGHT

Rain stripes the window behind a wet desk. A man in a hat works a file whose tab will not hold a word. Scorched manila folders rise in a stack beside an empty ashtray. The ashtray holds nothing, not even a stub. The burn across the top folder looks like the coastline of a country until he starts to name it, and then the coastline changes under his eye, a bay becoming a straight, a straight becoming a bay. He stops naming it. The burn settles into a new coast and waits.

He opens the folder. Where a portrait should be clipped, a photograph shows a man at a lamp: himself, this hat, this desk, this rain. On the wall behind him in the photograph the mounts are empty ovals, glassless and blank. He writes a name on the tab with a firm hand. The letters scorch, lift as curls of ash, miss the ashtray, and vanish before they land. A grey speck reaches the wet desk, spreads in the damp, and is gone. In the photograph the seated man stands up. The man at the desk is still sitting. He turns the photograph over. The back is the same picture, smaller, and in it he looks down at a folder with no tab at all.

He sets the pen down parallel to the ashtray and does not try a second name. Rain on the sill finds a crack and beads there without coming in. The photograph's empty ovals catch the lamp and give nothing back, no glass, no face, no smaller picture inside the blank. His hat brim drips once onto the blotter, a clean drop, and he blots it with a corner of unmarked paper. The drop is only water. The stack of scorched folders does not steam. He squares the open folder so the tab, now bare again, faces him, and he does not lean in to invent a letter in the scorch. The hat stays on. The rain does not write for him, and the lamp does not dry the tab into a name. The coastline keeps changing at the speed of a slow breath, never settling into a country he is willing to claim.

He leaves the stack where it is. Rain keeps moving on the glass. Time passes as the coastline burn on the top folder shifts again, a cape appearing where a minute ago there was inlet. In the smaller picture on the back, the seated figure stands as well, catching up to the front, and both images hold a man upright while the man at the desk remains in the chair. Not one tab keeps its ink. The empty mounts stay blank above the lamp, and the ashtray remains empty of everything the scorched letters refused to become.

The cape on the folder stays where the rain put it.
