File Without a Name
Key art
Prologue
Six seconds · nameless file
A file without a name. Empty photograph corners. Withheld light. There is no alarm. Only accumulation.
A name types itself onto the tab then burns out. The photograph inside is the person now sitting at the desk. The case is a stain.

Synopsis
Mystery Noir · Standalone
A stack of manila folders on a wet desk, and not one tab that will hold. The top of the pile has been burned in a shape that looks like a country until you try to name the country. Clipped where a portrait should be is a photograph of a man at a lamp. He is also, if you look through the rain to the chair, the man who is sitting there. The file has become a picture of its reader. It would rather burn than say his name.
An ashtray keeps two cigarettes and a patience that ran out. The lamp is brass and ordinary. Ordinary is the insult. Nothing in the room is staged like a secret headquarters. It is an office that stayed too late, and the lateness scorched the paperwork instead of the man.
A name does type itself, once, the way a guilty machine offers a draft. Then the letters go. You do not get to freeze the frame and use them. The last image of the story is not a reveal. It is the sitter, still uncaptioned, with the rain doing more administrative work than the folder.
Extended sequence
After the cut
After the last shot the tab is blank again. If you wait, the extra minute is the ash settling and the small sound of a photograph curling in the damp. He does not close the file. Closing it would suggest there had been an inside and an outside. There is only the stack, and him.
No one comes in to ask who the picture is of. The room has already met the only person qualified to answer, and he is busy not answering.
The stack stays the mess. The little photograph keeps the only face the folder will allow.
Four empty mounts, a man in a hat, the burn still on the tab. The name does not survive the trying.
Figures in the frame
Who remains
The sitter. The photograph of the sitter. They are not a symbol and its meaning. They are a man and the last picture the file was willing to keep, which happens to be him. Everyone else who might have been clipped into those corners has been promoted to absence.
A dossier would start from the empty tab and would have the decency to stop when it noticed it was describing the reader. Naming him would be another lie, a tidier one than the burn.
Codex fragment
Filed with the room
The sentence the camera would not hold: the folder knew the name and spent it as fuel. That is more agency than a folder should have, which is why the camera left it out. The fragment is allowed to be ruder than the shot.
It lives with the Fragments. It does not restore the letters.
Sound of Imagination
Residual
Paper, a wet window, the faint bell of an ashtray touched by a sleeve. If a typewriter appears, it should type and then untype, the second action quieter than the first, so the untyping feels like manners.
No residual is filed yet. The shelf for it is Sound of Imagination.
The Craft
Image · motion · sound
The key still stays the key. The stack, the little photograph, the ash, are the minute the lamp was close enough to scorch. Motion is accumulation: a page, a curl of paper, a name that fails. Not a chase. The chase already happened, offscreen, and lost.
Working notes live with The Craft.
Filed in The Houses
Darkness & Psyche · Mystery Noir
File Without a Name is filed under Darkness & Psyche in Mystery Noir. It is not the badge’s story and it is not the board of names. A missing name and a washed-off name are different injuries.
The screening waits. The folder does not. It is already open on the wet wood.
After the frame
Mark · keep · letter
Released rooms keep a mark from one to five, a keep on this device, and letters that stay with the page after the feed has moved on. File Without a Name is ready.
